Digital Caliper

I own an analog caliper and want to get a digital caliper also.

I want to spend between $12-$50 while getting good quality.

Can you give me a suggestion for this and vendor?

Thanks

I just looked at the most recent MSC sale flyer, they have SPI digital calipers on sale for $40. They read to .0005, which is as good as you get with calipers.

FWIW,
I hate to answer a question with an answer outside of requested bounds, however, I'd really recommend you look/consider the Mitutoyo Absolute Digital Micrometers with carbide faces on the jaws. Buy before the 28th and they have a 25% off sale plus free shipping at Zoro. Mitutoyo is just about impossible to beat, for a digital working tool, on the market. You won't need IP67 so IP65 should be more than enough. No SLC output. I use and prefer Swiss Etalon for Analog but digital Mitutoyo's Absolute Encoders are an entirely different affair. Long Island Indicator IS a great source of information. Their specialty is Swiss Analog, however, they too have gone to recommending Mitutoyo Digital Micrometers and I never thought I would see the day. Mitutoyo, just as a point of interest, has designed/built a digital SUB MICRON MICROMETER. Not a suggestion to buy but rather an indication of their spot in the world of metrology. They largely have the lead in the digital metrology direction at the moment...IMHO

One of the real benefits to Mitutoyo's Dial Caliper line is the carbide faces on the caliper blade surfaces. We were issued a junk Chinese Caliper at The School of Trades(not charged junk prices;-), mine fell apart at about month three and I pulled out the new Starretts I had brought from home. I had read, on Long Island Indicator's website, that Starrett Caliper Jaws were soft and would "ding" and would need to be sent in to be properly stoned back out. Anti-American to attack Starrett I thought...(Laughing in hindsight) Several weeks later I dinged my Starrett Jaws just to the point they showed .003" at the peak. Not being smart enough to KNOW MY LIMITATIONS I took one of our Spyderco Stones, Made a few miles down the road in Golden, and planned to "stone out" said ding. My careful efforts, so I thought, succeeded in ruined the caliper which was difficult/painful to round file. When it came time to replace them I could not believe my luck that Enco, back before MSC Bought them in total, had Etalons on sale at $105 per pair. I bought two Etalons, which knock on wood, continue to serve perfectly to this day. I use a few Starrett croblox gage block to check them and they continue to hit measurements on the head to .0005". The Etalons have a dot between every thousandth hash mark that indicates half a thousandth...

With my eyes not getting any better, the next caliper will be digital and they will, without question, be Mitutoyo...fwiw & imho

Regards, Matt.

Btw, The above is intended just to offer a little more information.

I know everyone's going to jump on me but I'm using a $10 digital caliber from Harbor Freight. But it checks well against my 0.0001" micrometers and feeler gauges, so it looks like a bargain to me.
A lot of people use them. It was recommended by A lot of guys when I first started. I to was shocked , but they work great.. Try one if you don't like it throw it in your tool box.. I bought a spare last year and it measures the same as my old one.. I just recommend getting some good energizer batteries at Wal-Mart for it..

I have no answers, but rather an observation and comment.

Whether it is Harbor Freight, Home Depot store brand or a dozen others, with the same "specs", do you not think they are being popped out by only a handful or less factories in China? Think supermarket store brands. I would bet my fat bottom that Food Lion or Stop and Shop does not have their own cheese processing plant or boiled ham processing plant or it own herds of cows for milk. As long as the specs are the same, I would venture a guess there is no difference between the $15 item from the $70 item.
