Good, inexpensive, digital dial caliper- Is there such an animal?

No Ray, I wasn't pointing at you by any means. And am not trying to offend anyone. Everyone should buy what they can afford and what their happy with. My comments are based from what the thread reads in whole. I see all the time people try to justify a lesser quality anything by saying it works just as good as a higher quality anything. Cars, motorcycles, tools, measuring interments and such. As well I see people overpay for something and try to justify it by saying because they spent 5x what it's worth that it has to be better.

I just think it's funny how we all have our own way to justify items we buy.

A Salvage action doesn't compare to a a BAT, I'm not paying over twice for something that doesn't have any benefit other then a name.. They are both imported, I don't weigh my tools on the cost of them.. If we are comparing names to tools I would compare Igaging to Sightron and Mitutoyo to March and a Harbor Freight to Tasco a plastic caliper to Salvage.. That is how I rate things

This made me lol ;D

I have been using the
mitutoyo absolute for many years, battery lasts a long time.

Also have starrett and B &S dial versions.

I can't say enough good about all three of them, and love the Mitutoyo absolute, look at paying around 79-$89 on ebay for them, maybe perhaps a little less at times.

While you are shopping, look for a coolant proof Mitutoyo digital mic, it will read to the 5th place, usually $89-$100, you will cherish this tool.

I have an older Mitutoyo dial caliper, and awhile back I bought a Hornady digital model. I don't recall the price but it was inexpensive. It measures the same as the Mitutoyo. Barlow

FWIW..my point is not that some calipers aren't better than others... Most importantly, no caliper will, nor is it intended to, take the place of a good micrometer. It is simply the wrong tool for the job when precise measurements are needed. That holds true regardless of its resolution. ..or how many decimals out it will read. Accuracy and resolution are two completely different things. If you need accuracy that's better than a thou or two...a caliper should not be the tool you pick up...regardless also of price.
