Digital Caliper ??'s

What brand do most of you gunsmithers prefer when it comes to digital calipers? I'm not smithing, but do want very good accuracy when measuring. The set I have now, Lyman are inexpensive and are beginning to give inaccurate readings, not very repeatable. Appreciate your time amd replys.

I have a set of Mitutoyo on my reloading bench. I have a pair of Fowler and SPi digitals I use at the lathe and mill. All seem reliable and repeatable. I don't use an expensive set around the machines. They seem to be attracted to the concrete floor!

If I were to go digi, it would be Mit.

Mitutoyo all the way..........glad to say I've never dropped a set yet - 40 years. I bought my Mit. dials in '78. Still going strong and in original box. Foam got crumbly so swapped out with a box that was being discarded a few years back.

They just don't make foam like they used to.........eh? ;-))

Off topic question… my Mitutoyo dial caliper is some 35 years old, never been dropped but has become hard to slide.

Given it's a precision instrument, what would you suggest as a fluid to clean it back to "new" ?

I've used denatured alcohol & WD-40 both to clean my mic's & calipers for years, but you have to be careful of each. The alcohol can wash out lettering on some instruments, so use it sparingly. WD-40 is a lot more forgiving, but has to be cleaned off afterward so that it doesn't dry & leave a varnish.

Kind of an oxymoron. Calipers are not made for precision measurements. That is what micrometers are for. I do have several sets of digital calipers. I do them for rough measurements. I have Starrett, Mitutoyo, Brown & Sharpe, and others. Anything needing closer than a .005" tolerance, the mics come out.

+1 that's what mics are for

Pass on the Starrett. Batteries go after a month. Mitutoyo's seem to last forever. One more thing... I never turn mine off. I can go out to the shop and their still on. Bought mine back in 1988. Broke my 8". Sad day, bigger screen....

I go along with Butch's concept, calipers are for rough stuff. And as such, They get grabbed and used all the time, and have also been dropped on the concrete floor! so I buy knock-off dial calipers, chi com stuff. They actually are fairly decent most of the time. Digitals? When I grab calipers, I want to go at it, not have to be sure and return it to zero and push the button.

Mics are for the serious stuff.
