Difficult .308 Win.

Forgot to add that part. I replaced the firing pin with a Gre-tan assembly. It had a J-lock. And replaced the Gre-tan spring with a Wolf 24# spring just to make sure. I might find a factory firing pin. I have heard that a heavy pin is better than I light one for accuracy. But you can find what ever you want to hear on the ol' interweb. Thanks for all yall's comments.

Not a lot of talk here about the ammo you are using...I hate to say it, but I have to...the bullets I used to shoot well seem like they are no longer any good. I have three personal rifles that I played with this spring and summer, a Cooper 243, a custom pre-64 Model 70 in 280 AI and another pre-64 70 in 30-06 AI. The 30-06 was my first clue as it previously shot lights out. I put it away and hadn't messed with it for about 10 years. Same powder, same brass {brand} with all the same prep, and same bullets...wouldn't shoot a 2" group. All three rifles got down to under 1/2" but only after I got Berger bullets and Vihtavuori powder.
There are so many factors regarding shooting and anyone in business doesn't want to upset their customers. Word travels fast when a guy gives up on his smith. When I have accuracy problems with something I worked on I always get the owner and the rifle back here for a trip to my range and see what is going on. Usually it ends up a "forest for the trees" type thing. His bench rest is scarce to non-existent, he has a BSA scope, he's shooting steel jacketed Russian junk ammo, there's 10 cents worth of copper in the bore, or he flinches so bad it looks like a crayfish crawled up his pants and clamped down on a gonad, etc.
i believe there is less than zero chance that two custom barrels are bad. The 308 is an inherently accurate round and the 308's I have owned/worked on/shot were not picky.
What does this thing do over a chronograph??? That would be the first thing I look at, just to see what kind of ammo consistency we have.

I shoot .308 for target from a bipod and rear monopod, so i understand the "if i try". The truth is, if i try my best i get .75" groups. If i try my best, zone out, stare long enough for things to get a little blurry and the noises around me get distant i can get .25" groups. Guess my gun likes the zen shooting style. I assume it is because i have less than ideally accurate rests, so everything is extremely finicky. Still i find it interesting how different my groups are when i think im trying my best and when i get into a deep "zone". I dont think thats whats going on here, just food for thought. Jesse

Get a new action, did this song and dance not that long ago with a customer. I told him it was his action and gave me the "it's been trued" thing. After a new action the problem went away. The top lug was .004"ahead of the bottom lug. I'd hedge my bets on the action.

That's what i'm starting to think also. I've replaced everything except the action. I'm waiting to hear back from the smith. He has been out for awhile. It should be this week and i'll be returning the rifle to him.
