I have a Krieger 308 fluted, varmint barrel for Winchester 70 w/extractor cut. I am interested in re-chambering it because it has a 9" twist rate and would be perfect as a 300 SAUM with some of the 200+ grain heavies.
Some history: It was originally chambered for something else and had 100 rounds through it. I purchased it at a discount and had it set back and re-chambered to 308. As a result of setting it back, the 308 chamber is into the flutes slightly. Did not affect accuracy at all because I had no problems handloading for routine 1/4-1/2 MOA accuracy.
So, what I have is a barrel that must be used on a Winchester 70 receiver and should not be set back any further because it is already into the flutes a little. But I know it's a damn good barrel and hate seeing it go to waste. Because the 300 SAUM is the same case length as the 308 Win, can it be rechambered without much trouble? or would this open a can of worms not worth opening?
Of course I know about the bolt face diameter differences and magazine differences. Mostly worried about the chamber and barrel.
