Did Rem change the 700 over the years?

Have you tried shooting w/o the box magazine in place. Sometime they dont fit
into the magazine well of the receiver properly, this causes it to bottom out in
the stock. When the action screws are tightened, it puts the action in a bind.

Sorry , it looks like a split behind the mag well . Just got new glasses and getting use to them .

On the mag box thing, after the rifle is assembled, you should be able to open the floor plate and shift the box up and down a bit between the recess that it is supposed to be in in the bottom metal and the action. Years ago I learned that it is easy to end up with the whole thing in a bind because of the split in the back of the box. The box needs to be "tucked in" as the bottom metal is installed so that it falls with the recess designed to contained it in the bottom metal. For the last one that I did, I used some scotch tape to hold the box split together for assembly. I do not care about it coming loose later, and it is thin enough that it did not get in the way. The next time that I have the rifle apart, I will simply remove the old tape, if needed, and apply a new piece, strapped across the gap at a right angle.
