Dicks Shedding Hunting Gear, Rifles, and Field and Stream.

Fear not for the holder’s of Dick Sporting Goods; they’ll not lose a penny. They will go to computer sales, where guns are added paperwork and they’ll make money. Oh, you aren’t worried about their welfare. The losers are the employees. Have you no heart? I walked into Dick’s in Port Huron one time. That’s all it took.

I used to go to Lowe’s, HD and the pharmacy often. Except for Starbucks, the gas station, grocery store and the dry cleaners, I seldom go to any brick and mortar store. As Bob Dylan said, “The Times They are A-Changin’ (1964).
Ben

The day they made their gun policy changes public I made a commitment to never set foot in one of their stores again. It's not just guns, it's all the other products we purchased when visiting their stores. they pissed off joe gun owner and they are now seeing the results of their actions.

Contrary to some beliefs here, Dicks actually did better at underperforming stores after removing hunting gear and guns. Here's a quote from the article, keep in mind that statements concerning business performance that might affect stock values are closely watched by the Feds. A lie could get a CEO's hinny in a bear trap.

Last year, Dick’s removed hunting items from 10 stores where it underperformed. After the removal, those stores generated positive comp sales in Q4. “Following this success,” Dick’s CEO Ed Stack said on the Q4 earnings call, “we will remove Hunt from approximately 125 additional Dick's stores in 2019 where the category underperforms.”

As much as we a gun enthusiasts would like to believe we hurt Dicks by boycotting, there doesn't seem to be any evidence to support that claim. Furthermore, in my very (scratch that, EXTREMELY) conservative County here in Texas, Sportsmans Warehouse, Gander Mountain, and Cheaper than Dirt have all come and gone in the last 10 years. Nearly all during a Democratically controlled W.H. and the big panic run on guns and ammo. So if we're buying everything in sight as soon as it hit the shelves, why are those big name stores going out of business?

The answer is, there's not enough of "US" to keep them going.

The Trump effect has caused business in both Cabalas and Bass Pro, both nearby to me, to drop considerably.
I was in B.P last week, it was deserted. My recent trip to Cabelas gun counter where I usually had to wait 20 to 30 minutes to get help, there was NOBODY at the counter and no waiting for the three sales persons on duty.

That's not a good sign! We need more young people to take up an interest in shooting sports if we want to keep all the choices we have.

Someone, anyone chime in with how we should go about doing that.
The CEO might have said that, but according to stock reports, I don't believe it. I think it's more a statement to try and revive sales and save their business. Matt

That may be true, in stores in locations that don't do much hunting or shooting like maybe in the center of NYC, San Francisco etc ? The hunting/shooting/fishing/camping inventory was likely dead weight.

No doubt about it, Matt. That's exactly what he's doing. His paycheck is in the form of company shares, so anytime the stock goes down, he takes a pay cut. But if he lies, he can end up sharing a cell with Manafort.

We LOVE to think it was our doing that's putting a dent in Dick's bottom line but in fact, it's a $$$ thing. Always has been and always will be.
Just like your vote really counts??:mad:

Seems like the last gun shop in San Francisco went down a couple of years ago. Thanks to the liberals. No use keeping the doors open if it's costing you.

True, seams the liberals I have encountered that claim to be somewhat firearm tolerant, shoot trap or skeet. It must be their version of picking a turd up by the clean end.

$ 449 Remington 700 Varmint in .223 at our local Dicks(200 mile round trip)...my local shop wants over $ 200 more... math can be a strange thing.

Hmmmmm, for a buck a mile not counting four hours of your time, sounds to me like the local shop owner has it figured out pretty well. ;)

OTOH if it's "in state" transfer he could ship it, no FFL required, for maybe $25. Wouldn't get a pre-sale inspection, though.

I buy at Dicks when they have sales on shotgun ammo. Why would I "Bite My Nose to Spite My Face". When the only other discounter in my area wants $70.00 a flat for 12 gauge shotgun shells and I can get them for $49.95 and use a $10.00 off coupon taking it down to $40.00 a flat, why would I not buy them.

If you look at Dicks stock over the last 12 months, it has a pretty normal fluctuation. Dicks also has a Return On Equity over 12% higher than the average of American companies traded on the exchange and a debt to equity ration that is so low that it keep investors interested.

Since Trump won the White house there has been a sharp decline in gun sales as gun owners seem to feel less threatened and less in a need to "Stock Up" then if there had been a democrat in the White House.

Then look at places like Gander Mountain, a store with a huge gun and firearms related department. The only one near me went out of business and is now a Lowes, with no gun department and the biggest stocking gun shop in my area, that had been around for over 50 years just closed it's does and had a liquidation sale.

You need to look at a lot more than a drop in gross revenue.

I do not like Dick's position, but support their right to do it and live with the results.

Since I return to this area over 20 years ago, WalMart out here on Long Island has never sold guns and has a very limited supply of anything gun related.

Bob, is Dick's going to continue to sell you cheap bulk ammo next week, and next year?

When I posted that article I never suggested Dick's was in danger, but telling stockholders our anti-gun stance cost us $150M last year probably wasn't fun. Maybe that's chump change and well worth it to save all those would-be victims of NRA-incited violence.

Brian, Right now it is my only source for easy to get cheap shot gun ammo. When they don't sell it any more, I will have to look elsewhere. If the big guys would ship ammo into New York, which is legal now except into New York City, I would be happy to order from places like Academy or Midway, especially when they have their sales, but they will not do it.

I suspect the BOD at Dicks Sporting Goods decided the negative feed back on Shooting Sports wasn’t worth the the negative feedback...just business.
Ben

I still shop Dicks twice a year for golf clubs, golf balls and gloves. BUT like others, when they made 21 to the min age to buy a weapon I gave up on the sporting aspect of the company.
