Detach Mag Stocks for Single Shot Actions

I knew when I got my Savage Precision Target Action (right bolt/left port single shot), that stock availability was quite limited. Especially because I don't like the looks of laminate. I can get a Manners, McMillan, H-S Precision and others that will work, but they have mag openings my single shot action does not need. How is the mag opening dealt with? I can't imagine it is just left open. Nor can I imagine trying to fill it in with some kind of compound and then matching it to the existing stock finish. ???

Just get one with a blind magazine. I used a stack of foam board to block up 90% of the cavity and then bedded right over it.

One of the reasons for a single shot is extra bedding surface. Get a stock made to fit your action.

After looking at different stocks, I am just stunned that the cost of the stock (w/bedding) may match or exceed the cost of the Savage target action AND barrel COMBINED! Hard to swallow a cost of close to $1000 just for the stock and bedding. I guess my tastes are just too rich.

I am using a Remington 700 BDL stock on my Remington 700 single shot action. I used BDL bottom metal to cover the hole in the stock and then filled the hole with Styrofoam up to close to where it needed to be bedded and then bedded the action.

i have a single shot converted rem action in a PDC chassis....no bedding needed....so i don't feel i give anything up by it being a single shot in a dbm stock

I checked PDC. While not so enthused with the aesthetics of the chassis, I became excited when I saw it was offered in a single shot model, for the Savage Precision Target action with my 4.40" screw spacing. This was great! Until I saw that option was an additional $500. Forget that!

The action is solid across the bottom, has a screw in the middle, and would like to use it. I really want to avoid filling in a hole in a stock to fit my action.

I am calling them tomorrow for delivery time on the Prairie Dog model. There is something about I am not quite sure about in the aesthetics area. Maybe the curve in front of the stock hook. Something. Still, the stock, internally adjustable cheek rest, 1" recoil pad, and extra charge for a 3rd pillar for my action, makes it $625. That makes it about $75 less than an equivalent Manners, but that is an estimate. I will be calling Manners to see if they can inlet for a Savage Target Action (3 screw). Then there is pillar bedding which appears to run around $220. Closing in on $1000. Ouch!

I'd be OK with one model of H-S Precision stock with aluminum bedding block for $400, but it has an opening for a mag.

And I thought finding a suitable stock for a Howa action was hard. The Savage is much more difficult.

I bought a Choate tactical stock for my savage action ( same as yours).
Works very well with only the front and rear screw tightened and an empty internal box mag.

I don't know why you act surprised since many of us warned you about this when you asked about actions. We told you to get a Remington or a clone. Try getting your money out of your Savage rifle when you're done with it. Not going to happen.

You can put your $500 action into a $1,000 stock.
Or you can sell your action, buy a custom action for $1,000, and put it in a $500 stock. It's all about decisions and consequences.

My original post read “…I knew when I got my Savage Precision Target Action (right bolt/left port single shot), that stock availability was quite limited". Knowing that, I asked about dealing with a stock that has a mag opening. There is NO "surprise".

Responders are helping with tips on people who could make a stock, and other options. Good stuff, I have several people to call.

I have heard ad nauseam, the pros and cons of the Remington. I don’t want one, at least not now. Perhaps a clone, some day.

You have assumed I will want to get my money out of the Savage. This is not about resale values. If it was, I would never home build ARs.

I don’t see any stock out there that I really like for $500, much less one I would put a $1000 action in. It seems that pretty much any stock/bedding or chassis with features I want will cost near $1000, regardless of what action is used.

You’re right about decisions (and consequences) and I'm fine with mine. Was only looking for info on how to fill a hole in a stock that uses a mag...

Yes, I have seen that it can be done at home, but not so confident about doing so. I'd feel better if I had a ratty old stock I could practice on! Even better if I could see someone do it. I'd certainly prefer to save $220 and the shipping of action/barrel to a gunsmith and wait for Lord knows how long.

Try stockade gun stocks. They make a really nice, solid stock with an adjustable cheek piece along with a blind magazine for around $550.

Thanks to all those who provided informative responses. I now know about PR&T, Stockade, Choate, and have contacted Joe Allen (Hammerjack on the board). All of these are good possibilities, most with the ability to fully bed the Savage action. I had not considered solid wood stocks (not laminates) as I did not think I would care for them, but with finer woods, these do like quite nice. After handling a friend's Cooper, I am warming to the idea of solid wood.
