deer rifle cartridge suggstions please

I'm with Webster on this; for 300 yds, you can load 125 gr soft-points, and have plenty of retained energy launching them at 2700 FPS or less, for which you use a lower load of H4895. See the Hodgdon website about reduced loads. Recoil on this will be less than almost any of the others mentioned, and I have gotten DRT results right in the shoulder.

If you are doing a 250 Savage and you have trouble finding cases for it just neck up 22-250s to .257 and you have your cases. ;D

boltman223,

The 700 action is as cheap as it gets feature wise.

Sell it to some gunsmith.

Since reliable feeding is what you (and I) want stay far away from the entry level push feed designs like that.

That 700 design lacks a safety that controls the firing pin, CRF etc.

Look at CRF M70's, Ruger 77, Some CZ's,

Also get a rifle with a soft recoil pad. The new Decelerator is the best however the old syle thick shotgun type pads work if your buying a gun with one on it where the LOP fits you.

What is he talking about???

And if I were gonna buy a factory gun it wouldn't be any of those, it'd be a Tikka.

Don't know what he is talking about ? I also would give a +1 to the 25 Souper or the 25-284

7-08, lots and lots of bullet choices, can be loaded from very light up to 160s or so, great performance. Second choice would be a 308. (I sold my hunting 308 a couple of yrs ago when finished a 7-08 build)

I purchased a set of 25 Souper (25-308) dies direct from Redding. I am sure you would be able to buy a set of Redding 260 Rem. S-Bushing dies, with the correct bushing and maybe a different seater plug, you can get there that route..

Redding 25 Souper (25-308) 2-Die Set #80865 approx. $150.
So I would say you would end up spending the same amount of money on dies, which ever way you go.. My reamer has a .289 NK, so with Winchester 308 brass, I have .003-.004 clearance, no neck turning required..

Boltman, I live south of the cities, who's going to smith this project? I ask because everyone of them I've talked to told me no project guns until after hunting season. Or is this for next year?

For what its worth, if your hunting from a tree stand and shooting down a lane like most hunters in this state do, I'd go with an off the shelf 25-06. Factory ammo is easy to find and is capable of any whitetail we have out to 200 yards easily.

Boltman,
Build whatever cartridge tickles your fancy. I do suggest that if you are interested in shooting some of the high BC bullets in any caliber, trade the short for a long action. You'll have many more options then as far as bullet choices. Also, don't overlook the 284 Winchester. With the 130 and 140 ballistic tips and others, you have a very effective, short action, low recoil cartridge. There seems to be much internet BS going around right now on the 284 being hard to feed. The 284 was designed to fit in the Winchester Model 100 semi-auto and the 88 lever action and with the bullets described above, it feeds beautifully.

Have fun,
Scott

Like he said there are no feeding issues with the 284 case, I have a 6mm-284, 25-284 and a 6.5-284 all built on Rem.700 BDL never had a problem and also read some of the same BS stories, just like the horror stories of 17 calibers.

here's the deal, no matter what the animal you shoot get a gun like a 338 lapua or a 338-378 weatherby. that way you can shoot it in the butt and drive it's head into a tree and break it's neck. :) 50 cal may be the best deer gun ever

Well the 6.5 sweede really tickles my fancy actually and so does a 25 cal like a 25-308 I even like thought of a 260. Heck, I guess they all sound good haha. A 284 looks like it would have more recoil than I want, the extended range would be nice though. I guess I would have to try one out to see. So I'm going to take my time to decide what I really want. So in the mean time....

I'm came across a model 7 in 243 a couple of days ago. I really like model sevens so went ahead and I bought it, I figure it will give me a chance to see what a 243 is like and help me make a better decision later on. The only downfall with this gun is the velocity loss with the 18.5" barrel. Thanks for all the input.

Congrats.
Don't doubt the ability of short barrels. :D

300#s is not unheard of in mn. ! not wanting recoil of 308 all listed would be o.k. but with bullet choices I think 7-08 might be best . before I had shoulder replaced I shot 7mm mag. I've hunted many trips to Canada and several times I had to have that much gun . mn is on the border , same deer . I now don't go north of Kansas and shoot a muzzleloader and yes I feel undergunned ! leaving next week for 14 days muzzleloader and crossbow !

I cant believe someone would say stay away from a remmy reciever. More accurate guns have been built on them than anyother in fact why does stiller, bat, kelbly and the like copy the design? Maybe because it works and you dont need controlled round feed. I have fired thousands of rounds from remmys over my life and never had an issue with push feed. I think the 7-08 would fill your ticket quite nicely as this discussion moves on,I put a savage 7-08 together and it is a hammer with 120 grain bullets etc.Recoil is not bad at all considering I have 3 tears in my rotater cuff.If I can do it you can too. Good luck and whatever you choose I hope you have fun with it.
