deer rifle cartridge suggstions please

I would use a 50 bmg , or a rpg ..... I hate deer for eating all my pretty flowers, my dhaliahs need revenge ! due to your bolt face, and length limitations, 7mm o 8 , or 260 rem ...... Harvest away, and harvest often

You will probably not see much difference in recoil between a 260 and a 7-08, particularly if shooting similar weight bullets.... for example the 140's that are common in 6.5 and 7mm

both the 260 and 7-08 can be loaded with lighter offerings and perhaps you can find a load that is accurate and on the slower end of the range. that would maybe result in lower noticable recoil

both are dandy deer cartridges.

If the mag well was longer I would suggest the 257AI but since it's not I would go with either the 260 Rem. or the straight 284 Win. or 7-08.

Nothing wrong with the 308. If you hand load just use a lower or minimum powder charge. You can feel the difference in recoil with a 1 grain change in powder.

If you're shooting through brush, the heavier 7 08 would do a bit better I think, If shooting in open country, the .260 would shoot flatter. The suggestion of the 6.5 Creedmoor might be a good choice also.....probably better than the straight .260 but JMHO

You really don't need a long action for a 257 Roberts. I have one on a Rem 700 SA. Last shot I took last year killed an 8 pt at 540 yards using a 115 Nosler Ballistic tip.

Down for the count at 540 with the "Bob"......and that's just one of many that have met with one of my 257 Roberts rifles and lost.

Recoil is light and it's a heavier bullet than any 6MM.

FWIW a buddy and I built 2 rifles, very similar to each other in every respect except for caliber. 7mm-08 vs 260.

Savage PTA, 30" Criterion barrels, Excellent glass, Target style stocks.

Shooting at 1k guess which did better?

Neither.

Guess which kicked noticeably harder.

Neither.

And then the wind kicked up. The 7mm was shooting a 175 and the 260 a 140.

The 175s struggled a little, went from 1/2 MOA to 1-2 moa in a hurry.

The 140s, well who knows, never got them back on target.

The 260 that I had done up has quite a bit less recoil than the Tikka T-3 Lite in 243 that I hunt coyotes with.

I'm going to use the Tikka as a donor for another 260. Love that cartridge.

If you are having a custom done, getting it throated for the bullet you want to use taking into consideration your mag length will make for a more pleasing end product.

I took the re-done-as-260 on a last hunting trip before handing her over to my son. I didn't see a shooter buck, but this big dog coyote came out in the gas line right of way at 226 paces. The 130 Berger anchored him with authority 8)

Just love that cartridge.

Go with a 24" barrel in 1:8 or 1:8.5 twist and chamber it in 257AI or 260 Rem. or 6.5 Creedmoor. With these twist you can shoot any bullet from varmint to heavies for large deer.

+1

Mine is a 1:8. Wanted te son to have flexibility to shoot heavies. I've got some Accubonds waiting to try.

The best all around caliber I think is the 243 or 243IMP idea for deer well past your posted yardage the 87gr VLD bergers or those bad 85gr BTHP (#1530) sierras....

Daughter child has a 7-08 and the load we're using is the Barnes 120 TSX. This leaves a round 2900 fps and although she's yet to use it on deer, my experience with the Barnes bullets tells me it will do fine at 300 yds. The 120 gr will yield a light recoil. You also haver the range of bullet weights from 110- 175 gr. I wouldn't be afraid to use the 700 on rabid deer. Ive had a few difficulties over the years w/ feeding over over long ammo, but no failure to extract. I frankly have had more trouble with the crf families of action. I dont hesitate to use either. the comment about longer cartridges in the 700SA are valid. the 57mm case will be less than ideal.

My Rem 600 mag box is 2.8" and the 6.5 Creedmoor would've been a better overall choice than 260 Rem (which has worked well on deer) so I would say 260 or 7-08 (my hunting partner has shot many deer with that) if you have a longer magazine.
I think 6.5 Creedmoor has more off-the-shelf ammo choices than 260 if you don't reload - obviously 7-08 has many choices.

Go to the following website it gives the recoil energy for about 100 cartridges. I still like the 308. It doesn't really recoil a lot. If you hand load you can reduce the recoil to any level you are comfortable with. If it's for hunting only you may shoot it only 5-10 shots a year. You can walk in any sporting goods store and buy ammo. Easier to sell if you want to get rid of it. You don't need to buy a rifle then stick another $500 into it for a custom non-standard caliber barrel. You don't want to have to fireform brass for a rifle that may only be shot once a year during deer season. Cheap 308 brass easy to buy anywhere. I think some of the replies gave calibers with recoil close to a 308. I wouldn't buy an unusual caliber to just go deer hunting. It's not complicated, just about any rifle equal to a 243 Win or bigger will work.

The chart at this website should help.

I shoot specialty pistols amd have them in 7-08, 308 and last year picked one up in 6.5X55 Swede. It is awesome ! Have not been able to stretch the distance on whitetail yet, but have no concerns when the opportunity presents itself. The cartridge is easy to load for and accuracy has proven outstanding. That would be my vote.

I have never had a issue with the 243win , very light recoil and 3100 FPS with a 95gr Nosler Partition is more then enough for any light skinned game.

Well I've been thinking about it and I would really like to do a 6.5 sweede 2nd choice would be the 257 bob but, since I have a short action and I am going for the least amount of recoil possible I have decided on the 250 savage. Having something that's not as common we also something I liked.

Thanks for the input, it all was helpful and appreciated.

So now on my list of builds is a:

6br
250 savage
20-222
308 for F-TR on a singleshot action
And 221 fireball
