Deer Hunting with the 6BR

I want to try my hand at harvesting a doe with my 6BR. I have the following bullets on hand Hornady 105 amax, Berger 95vld, 90 Swift Sc, 95 Gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Which would you recommend? Any load data?

Is your barrel twist fast enough for the 87-105 grain bullets???
I have killed whitetail deer with the 6BR here in Texas with 62 grain Watson match bullets out of a 14 twist barrel...Distances over 100 yards might dictate heavier bullets...But I have personally killed deer with a 68 grain match bullet at 160 yards with a shoulder shot...If you do not place the bullet in the right place a 180 grain 30 caliber bullet will also loose deer...Bullet placement is just as important as bullet choice..

105 Amax, I'd stay on the hot end of your load. 30gr varg or RL-15 depending on your rifle & twist. Interested on what others might suggest.

I've been thinking the same thing, but with 80 gr. Hotcors out of my 1/12 twist bbl. Problem is I don't think It's got enough steam out at 300 yards to do the job humanely. I don't think trying it at 100 yards would be much fun.

Tim,

I use a 6BRX for deer. I use a 100 gr Noslor partition. The Swift is a big game bullet. it may be the best.

That 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip is no slouch either.....
Never used the 95 Berger VLD but wouldn't hesitate a second......
Any of the ones mentioned will have you eating good all winter...
A 55 grain BT stuck in the right spot will have you eating good too.....

28.5 varget/105 amax, 2850 mv, in 26" pac-nor 3 groove in a Ruger #1 custom.

double lunged, with exit, deer stumbled 25 yds before dropping

Range LRF 400 yds.

I plan to use more in my next 6BR, but also will use plenty 95 BTs, perhaps Sierras 85 BTHP,seen it kill deer very quickly in 243 to 300 yds), and also the 85 gr barnes X as I dropped a large hog a 240 yds DRT, with 243 20" mv 3100. My 6BR did 3,000 w/95 BTs so it should equal that short 243 w/85s.

Also dropped a couple of deer with 70 TNTs, one neck shot 45 yds, darned near took head off, DRT. Another lung shot, broadside, dead in 60 yds, range 200yds.

Shot placement first, bullet second. Bullet choice can dictate shot placement choice, or shoot/no shoot during given situation.

A 95 BT will expand and hold speed downrange, but still hold together and penetrate from hard angles, the 105 amax will expand rapidly so close range and bad angles may be 'no-go' but I even head shot a 40 yd doe a couple of years ago, broadside but I had a standing deer facing me so it was lights out, no chance of any following a trail that evening.

6BR in my mind can nearly duplicate killing effectiveness of a 243 to 400 yds w/good bullets and placement.

Swifts should be good bullets, never used, partitions penetrate, but also leave narrower wound channels and I like more expansion/wider wound channels myself. IF using a PT, I'd go with 85 or 95, latter first. Said to be more accurate than 100. Standard cup/core will do in a 100gr in a pinch but again see the top of post for my choice deer bullets in 6mm.

Good hunting.
