.243 Hunting Bullet Opinions Requested

Paul....great pic,,,trophy coyote,,big healthy ,,no mange,,nice flute job on rifle and your dog looks posed perfectly,,he is good company,,,,,is that Idaho?,,,a .243 is a perfect hunting rig,,,Roger

I seem to be in the minority but the 85 grain Speer boat tail bullet has worked great for me on antelope out of my 6x47 Lapua. I used that bullet to take a 200 pound sow with my XP-100 243 AI and now have just purchased a Browning B-78 in 6mm that is shooting that bullet less than moa consistently. Meat damage has been minimal on all of the antelope. Tom

Expiper,

Yes this is one of my hunting spots just outside of Boise, Id. A fun area to hunt with some nice coyotes.

I've killed a yote or 2 with the 70 t-n-t's and they just fell. Didn't come out. But that ain't a good one for deer.
The yote that I killed with the accubond was hit at the back of the ribs.

Going to use a .243 as a multi purpose gun:

Whitetail Deer
Eastern Coyote
Groundhogs

Decided to use a bullet around 85-90 grains that will kill a deer humanely, not rip a coyote in half, and shoot accurately for groundhogs. Most shots will be around 250 yards. Will go with some type of hollow point or soft point. Is it just a matter of picking the below bullet with the best ballistic coefficeint. What am I missing? The Speer and Hornady looks like my top choices. Help me with your input to confirm my thoughts or disprove my thinking.

Have not been impressed with Berger VLD bullets on deer so although they seem to have a great ballistic coefficient...kinda biased against them.

I run 87 grain Berger Vld expensive for a do it all bullet but they are accurate and deadly

Looks like nobody shoots Speer bullets in the .243?
Is the only bullet I use in my Tikka .243 Win with 1:10 twist. Cheap, accurate and available here in Oz. I did try the Sierra 85 BTHP but it lacked penetration on big pigs. The Speer seems a little tougher but still expands on smaller animals. Took a few dingoes on the run last trip - DRT. Same trip I shot a lot of decent sized pigs and even those hit a bit far back while running dropped. Only one required a finisher.

Which Speer .243 bullet are you referring to here? Thanks.

Personally, I’d probably use one of the Nosler BTs in the 243. As for coyote shooting, use the 223 and 40 gr Nosler BTs. Usually, the 40 gr BT doesn’t exit, or at least that’s been my experience so far. All the energy stays in the coyote, and drops them on the spot.
