Decimal moa ballistics

Ok, so I understand moa adjustments for the most part...but I have a problem when the moa solution is fractional, like 3.6, 7.3 etc. Is 3.6 rounded down to 3 and a half moa (14 clicks) or up to 3-3/4 moa (15clicks) ? Might be a simple question, but really has me stumped...rsbhunter

With a 1/8 moa click you could get 3.625 moa. 29 clicks. Does that make it easier?

Not when I'm using a 1/4" moa scope, if I had 1/8" adjustments, yes it would be awesome....in the competition I shoot, its at ranges of 200-500 meters.... So 1/4 moa shrinks the margin of error greatly...rsbhunter

Sorry I was just kidding. Yes. You have to round it to .25 .50 .75. 1moa at 500 is 5” .25 moa at 500 is 1.25”. So at 500 1 1/4 “ adjustments is all you get. Of course somebody’s gonna call me a dummy. 1.0472 yeh, yeh.

Opp sorry one more thing. Reference the numbers you listed 3.6 and 7.3. 3.(6) is closer to 3.5 than it is to 3.25 or 3.75. 7(.3) is closer to 7.25 than it is to 7.0 or 7.5. cheers.

I didn't take offense, I wish I had gone with 1/8 moa.... It kind of scares me dialing alot with 1/8 moa. I know scopes are tougher today than ever, but everything is halved for adjustments, and it takes twice the wear and tear on the turrets.... But it would be fantastic to have the precision of the 1/8 moa....Thank you very much for the responses, it does help alot...rsbhunter

Whether 1/8 or 1/4 MOA turrets, round to the nearest turret click adjustment. If the POI is still off by something less than one click, and you're actually a good enough shot to know with certainty that it's off, you'll have to hold off the remainder, or just live with it. Going with a smaller scope adjustment such as 1/8 MOA will provide finer adjustment, but it also means more clicks when dialing a large adjustment, as you noted.

That's why I like MILS. I own both but a lot of paper punching is based on MOA targets so there ya go. Some scopes now even have .05 MIL adjustments. If you are as anal as I am I have a rifle that is pretty well dedicated to shooting at 600 yard targets. So I sighted it in for 600 and now I generally only have to adjust for wind. No more cranking up the scope like a mad man. Hmmm...that gives me an idea. I've never thought much of the removable scope rings but if you had a scope sighted in for a specific distance and another one sighted in for another distance....:D

Your scopes will live a longer and healthier life if you DO crank them a lot. Scopes that never move fail a lot more often than those that get their exercise
