Decapping W/O Full Length Sizing?

I'm new to reloading. I'll probably always consider myself new due to the vast amount of knowledge that is available.

If neck sizing, how do you decap your brass without full length sizing?

I always decal first, tumble with stainless steel pins, then after close inspection, load.

I've just come home, put my brass in the tumbler, decapped/sized, clean the primer pocket, and carry on with the process.

So for example, the RCBS Universal Decapping Die doesn't size your brass, it ONLY decaps it?

Screw the FL die out a 1/4 or 1/2 turn. You will size most of the neck and not touch the shoulder. But I use a Lee de-capping die, clean my brass and then use a FL or collet die, depending what I want to do to the case.

Yes it does. It is no different visually than a full sizer. You look on the top or side and see F/L or NECK stamped on it to tell one from the other. (at least with RCBS and other similar dies) They BOTH have decapping rods sticking out.

The Lee universal decapping die is cheap and fast.

Yes it does. It is no different visually than a full sizer. You look on the top or side and see F/L or NECK stamped on it to tell one from the other. (at least with RCBS and other similar dies) They BOTH have decapping rods sticking out.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it. I know that things like this are trivial and perhaps stupid to you. But for a new guy like me who doesn't know, it's great that you guys have enough patience to offer answers and suggestions.

Not to complicate matters but I have to ask: What are you reloading? Reason I ask is if it's say a 6br and Lapua brass the flash hole is smaller in diameter than other brass and you need a thinner pin ( I think standard everything is 62 thousandths and the Lapua is 57). Nearly everyone offers the smaller pin. If it's not Lapua your reloading just forget the above.

No, it's neither one of those but I appreciate you bringing it to my attention.

I use a Lee decapper and base from a Lee hand decapping set.
It is used with an 8 oz plastic face hammer. This has been my way of decapping since 1971.
It keeps the garbage out of my press. I have never bent or broken a decapping rod.

The Lee universal decapping die is cheap and fast.

+1 on the Lee its cheap and it works. Plus remember a decapping die is basically one size fits all so you only need 1,, not 1 for every caliber...just fyi

I use the Frankford Arsenal Hand Deprimer (http://www.btibrands.com/product/hand-deprimer/). With that tool, I deprime in the living room while watching television, then quickly set the tumbler in the garage and race back to finish watching my shows. I like the independence of a hand deprimer, because I can deprime independent of my press that's in the garage, and I never have to run dirty brass through any of my die's.

With RCBS FL dies you can set them up to neck size only and decap at the same time, no problem. You can even set them up to deprime only, just a little common sense and reading the instructions will show you the light.

It is not written nor is it discussed but Herter dies in a set are designed to be used as a de-primer without sizing or touching the case. Sizing dies for large cases can be used as universal deprimers.
