Day 1 - CA Sac Valley Regional Palma - March Madness

thanks for sharing Bryan, would like to shoot that range some time if I could avoid getting arrested on the highway for carrying too much ammo!
Set your cruise control 2-3 mph over posted speed. When you stop for gas do a walk around and check your lights, always use your signal. Remember Californians love to drive in the fast lane, and passing on the right is a sure fire way to get pulled over. We follow these ules whenever we go through Cali.

Is there a ammo transport law I missed here in calif?
Probably several, as they pass new ones almost daily. Such as locked in a separate compartment, background check to buy, transporting across the border, etc...

Congratulations to all !.!.!

Just an observation: repeatedly notice when reading California match results how few of shooters/participants there ever is. Just seems so odd to me that a state as big as California, with its 39-million residents (1st in the nation), that the active participation is always so low. Can't help but wonder why?

The last state/regional matches have all been plagued with possible rain, making turnout a bit on the light side.

CA is also a rather large state, making it hard, challenging or financially tough to travel 400-500 miles (if you live in southern CA) to shoot a 2-day match. There are quite a few southern CA shooters and they are normally seen at the Coalinga matches, which is closer by a couple hours for them.

Many Nevada residents who travel to the matches on a regular basis were snowed in due to a single highway being their only way of getting to the range and that highway was closed for a couple days.

I have noticed T/R shooters on the lighter side over the last couple years though.

I'm in NV and I like shooting Coalinga and Sac, but like Brian said, weather plays a big role. its not expensive to shoot two days in either location if you're willing to car-camp or spring $100 for 2 nights. But the equation changes when there a chance that one or both days will get rained out, which has happened to me on more than one occasion in both locations. One time I had to spend a very cold night in my car in Colfax waiting for the roads to open so I could get home. Definitely a disincentive!

That's also what's great about shooting in Reno, NV. We get 360 days of sun a year. For those still seeking fame and glory who weren't able to make it to March Madness due to weather concerns, Reno will have the Nevada State Long Range Championships in May....

@bsumoba & @NV Highpower
Don't get me wrong here, not trying to discredit nothing, and hear what both of you are saying.

It's just that California is +35-times larger in population then most all other states, and it doesn't seem to matter what discipline or shooting venue it is, the participation at matches is hardly ever greater then other states. For many years I have read results to High Power venues from all over the USA. And as I stated, repeatedly see, what I myself consider; low participation counts at all CA matches.

It just baffles me to why... with that many people living there.

CA is a tough state to get into guns. You are big minority in CA if you are into guns, yet alone competitive target shooting.

That being said, I think it might be a discipline thing. I bet if we were to look at 3-gun and PRS style matches held in CA, there are great turnouts for those types of events. Highpower (Sling and F-Class)...not nearly as popular; and I do not think it is the cost. Our guns cost as much if not less than some of the equipment I see PRS guys running. Those matches are probably looked at as being more fun, more "tacticool" and falls in line with things you see in games, like Call of Duty or in movies like American Sniper or Lonme Survivor.

The Tacticool crowd is really big at Sacramento. And the sling shooters outnumber us F guys by a good margin. I'm really not sure why they're not more F shooters. I'll be there this weekend for the mid range championship.

CA is such a strange state with guns. There are a lot of gun owners but an awful lot are more interested is shooting AR firecrackers. "Target" shooting is full mag dumps at old refrigerators.

As Bryan mentioned the state is so huge travel distances are part of the problem. If your down in San Diego and want to shoot at Sac this weekend your looking at 11-12 hours or more in travel each way. From my home in Northern CA I can be in Canada in about 14. That's how long this state is.

Considering coming over the hill from Reno this weekend for the mid-range matches. Weather may be a deciding factor though with forecasted storms later this week. Plus skiing is getting very good due to the recent storms.

It's not looking bad if you come over the hill Friday and go back Sunday.

I am seeing a chance of snow the entire weekend on the NOAA website. Will have to see how it develops. Not looking forward to sitting in traffic for hours if chain controls are up.
