Daughters First Deer

My oldest daughter who just turned 10 at the beginning of the month shot her deer during the opening morning of the Minnesota youth rifle season. She used her custom 223 Rem that I built for her and made a perfect shot dropping the doe on the spot with a 65gr Sierra Gameking.

The deer was quartering to us and the bullet broke the top of the shoulder and hit the spine ending up on the off side in the back strap. The shot was 107 yards and I was surprised how well that 223 performed. I had some reservations about using it but she shoots the rifle well and I did not want to induce any issues trying to make her use a bigger rifle that she was not comfortable with.

I'll bet she likes venison too! I like the way shes holding up those ears as as if they were horns:p:D:D
I taught my Daughter years ago how to skin and clean game...she got married and knew more than
her husband about preparing game....:D:D:D

Congratulations! That is awesome. Couldn't get either of my daughters near a gun. One now shoots pistol and has her CC license. Just switched my wife's 223 loads from 60 gr. Nosler Partitions to the 65 gr. Sierra SBT's. They shoot better in her rifle and sounds like should perform well on Whitetail. Thanks for sharing the story and picture!

Congrats to your daughter and dad too. Keeping skills alive and passing down knowledge to the next generation is important.

Thank you everyone! I am very proud of her!!! I started her shooting around 4 or 5 years old and she has fired probably 400 rounds out of that 223 practicing the last couple of years. We put in a lot of time last year varmint hunting and she had a couple longer shots at fox and missed so she never connected on a fox or coyote. We have been bow hunting this fall for her first time and she missed a small buck so far but I am glad this rifle hunt worked out for her. Through all the up's and down's she refuses to give up on hunting so that impresses me to. For this hunt we had been scouting a few times before the season and noticed deer were coming off some state land onto this field that was private land and I asked the land owner for permission which he said yes that we could intercept the deer.

That opening morning of the hunt we walked out where we had seen the deer a couple days before and ended up catching that doe coming back to bed and there was not time to film the kill. When we got the deer back to the pickup I drove over to land owners house and we both shook his hand and thanked him for letting us on his land and offered him some deer meat which he declined. After we left I explained to her you want a good land owner relationship and you always thank them and offer them some of your game. After the visit with the land owner we now have a new place to hunt Coyotes this winter.

Hopefully bow hunting goes our way in the next couple of weeks as she has been working hard at that to.

Huge congrats to her and kudos to you for taking your daughter hunting! Good job all around.

My granddaughter is already begging me to go hunting. I am bringing her along slowing and I hope when she reaches Ten, I will have a beautuful picture like that to hang on the wall. Congrats to you and the little sharpshooter!

Had to call my wife over to look at the picture. I put a 223 together for her and she enjoys shooting it. She does hunt prairie dogs when we go out West. She has resisted deer hunting so far.

With such a neat picture inspiration you just never know. Thanks.

Beautiful young lady. My daughter loves the deer meat but hasn't been to interested in hunting. I don't push it but hope she tries. I have several good rifles for her to try.
