Data 4197

I have an 8# jug of Data 4197, lot# 13994 and am seeking some help. I plan to try it in my 6 PPC with 68 gr. BT and FB bullets. It says on the label that it is 1 to 3 grains slower than IMR 4198. Since I have not used either in the 6 PPC, I am asking for some help from someone who has used this powder. Thanks in advance for any help. James Mock

Accurate has some info about all the Data and surplus powders sold in the last ten years or so on their web site, don't see 4197, maybe shoot them an email?
Lot '13994' sounds like it may have been originally sold in 1994, good luck with the info.

HI James,,,,what you have there is excellent powder for your 30 BR,,,,It is too fast for a PPC,,,,,, years ago ,I had the chance to use a cupla pounds of 3032 in my 22 BR that I wuz tinkering with at that time and shot many good groups with it ,,,( an un-official "bag gun" 10 shot record,,.135" @ 100yds,) I wish I had a pikup truk load of it,!!!......I know that you are not a internet shooter or duffer who just posts to get stupid answers,,,,my best one is save it for the 30 BR or trade it to someone who is shooting one now,,,,Roger

i have data sheet for that powder, will try to find it tommorow. e mail me if you need it. i also think that it is faster than 4198. am still using my stash of 3032 and 4065 . both are faster than 3031 and 4064.

Thanks all. After chronographing this lot today, I have concluded that this lot is too slow for the .30 BR, but seems to be great in the 6 PPC. 26.5 gr. behind a 68 gr Moore FB bullet in my 21.5" Bartlein (13.75 twist) gave 3080 fps. 27.8 gr moved it up to 3218 with no pressure signs. I next tried 28.5 and got 3312 fps but the bolt lift was a little harder than normal. Today is very hot and humid in Louisiana and I backed down to 28.3 gr. and tried that with Bart's Ultras and got 3275 fps and no pressure signs. 28.3 may be the upper limit on these hot summer days. PS- There are 3 lots of this powder and they act like three different powders. My lot (13994) is quite a bit slower than 4198, but I understand that there is a lot that is faster than 4198. With these three lots being so different, I wanted to be safe and get some info before trying it on this hot day. Thanks all for the information.

After thinking about the .30 BR and this 4197, I decided to see if it was fast enough to work with the 115 gr 10X bullets that I shoot. Since it is July and Louisiana weather is very warm, I decided to start with 34.0 gr of the 4197. I shot one sighter and a 3-shot group over my Oehler chronograph. The group was vertical and measured 0.200 at 100 yards. The velocity was 2800 fps. This is too slow, so I bumped the load to 35.0 grains and got 2897 fps. The group, however, was a round dot measuring 0.061". I may use this load for 100 yards at the LA State VFS Championship on July 27th. Although I would prefer a little more velocity, I may settle for ~2900 fps with the accuracy. James PS- The BAT-actioned rifle features a Hawk Hill barrel that is 18 twist and is a cut-rifled 4-groove. This is a new barrel maker that I believe will be heard from in the near future. The scope used was the new Burris XTRII 8x-40X that I am testing. James Mock
