Dasher Freebore

timeout

Silver $$ Contributor
I'm shooting 105 Berger VLD's, seated about .010" into the lands. I have a Harrell's FL bushing die made to my fired brass. Freebore is .104" according to the reamer print. When I seat the bullets, neck tension is smooth and even until I get most of the way in and then it immediately lessens as the bullet is either going past the area resized by the bushing, the neck/shoulder junction, or both. I am fairly certain it is going beyond the neck/shoulder junction. I can alter the Harrell Die to get a little more depth when resizing, but I am fairly certain that won't be enough to solve the issue. What freebore are you guys running with the Berger 105 VLD's? Also what freebore for 115 Dtacs? I have a unithroater, but would prefer to ask for your specs before I deepen the freebore. Thanks!

Push the VLD in till just till just before it gets loose, measure the OAL, use this for your throating gauge with your unithroater.

Tim is exactly right. You will probably end up around .150 with the vld if you want to keep the shank of the bullet in the sized part of the neck (and you do) using a Harrell's die.

Thanks guys, I'll do it. I better not mess up, as the wife is going to shoot this one. It is shooting pretty well now, so am hesitant to mess it up. Surely it can only shoot better when the bullet stays above the neck/shoulder junction. It is a new chamber job on a barrel that has about 200 rounds in it as another caliber. It never would shoot that caliber. Just fired a couple three shot groups in the low 1's.

There was a lot of WR shot with the 104, if it's shooting why take the chance...that is my take. I'm not WR dasher shooter but the last two I've had done were 104 and I can't imagine any longer freebore making them shoot better. Besides...you'll burn that up fast enough.
