Dasher forming question

Isn't 34gr a bit "Spicy" for a fire form load?
CW

I sure didn't say 34 gr. but he is using a 90 gr. bullet I never had luck with fire forming with light bullets i like 115,108 or 107 with Varget and the amount of powder will vary the length when fire forming….. jim

I was using 27gr of H4985 and jammed 0.020" and was loosing 16% of my cases to splits around the shoulder (Norma 6BR Brass).

I then annealed the new brass and went to 30.5gr and have had 100% success.

I figure the first scenario would have worked ??

I have an expander to 0.257" and the same result as above.

Jim the only reason I used 90 gr. bullets was I didn't want to shoot my good ones! I also have about 1500 old sierra 80 gr. bullets, and I got the r-15 cheep. You guys are measuring length of the brass right. Sometimes you have to be specific on here.

The general consensus is that the new blue box brass blows out much shorter than the old gold box..all mine come out around 1.540 which is what most people end up with. Jim apparently has a top secret method or lot of brass one. He apparently get his to blow out to 1.550 every time...most don't and end up at 1.540 or so, which is fine. Your not doing anything wrong if they aren't 1.550..they shoot just fine at shorter lengths. You do need to pay attention and make sure you don't get a carbon ring in front if the necks, but regular cleaning is all it takes...

Size the necks down with a 262/263 bushing, load them long with mild load of powder and shoot them. I shoot local F-Class matches while Fireforming mine and the prove very accurate.

++ As Jim stated on the blue box forming shorter than the old gold box which I haven't seen for awhile. They shoot fine at shorter OAL but you do leave room for carbon to build as was stated. It was for that very reason when I spec'd out my dasher reamer I requested a "bit" shorter chamber length to alleviate that concern. Time will tell but 1500 rounds on 2 barrels and no concerns with either. I formed up 400 and with the false shoulder & 108's not jammed and I lost less than ten. Eric in DL

My hydroformed brass measures 1.558 after fired once 1.550. Never been a problem with me and several other guys I have done it for

Blue box - current production Lapua 6BR brass

Gold Box - Out of production Lapua 6BR brass..

There are differences in the two, mainly neck thickness with the gold box being thicker necked...

The blue box brass i hydro formed came out short, i must be doing something wrong. .....

Mine was in the 1.54.. range.:(

That is actually a little long compared to what most get. If they are not fully formed they will be longer. Once you shoot it, they will get shorter. Matt

I`ll have to measure the formed brass to confirm that in fact it was 1.54.." my memory Isn`t that great................

I seem to remember being upset with how short it was, thought I was really doing something wrong, still kinda think I was.....;)

My blue box lapua brass all blew out to 1.54" using a 30K jam method. I did not have a single failure jamming. I did some with the false shoulder and they too, formed around 1.54". Some brass that I hydroformed (or at least attempted to hydroform), blew out to much less than that, 1.53'ish. I will stick with jamming 30K into the lands with 105 VLDs going foward for my fireforming, until bullets.com comes out with their dasher brass...

But, I have a confession...I shot both the 1.54" and 1.53" brass in a recent mid-range match and saw no difference, averaging under X-ring vertical at 300, 500, and 600 yards, and that was mixing the two. It isn't a benchrest match, but I had a 20-shot group at 300 yards that measured 1.91" edge-to-edge (horizontal) and 1.30" edge-to-edge (vertical).
