Dasher forming question

So why expand up, then neck turn at that size, then create false shoulder with bushing? Vs turning at 6br, then expanding up, then creating false shoulder with bushing?

Assuming going .25 cal or 6.5 to expand to create false shoulder

Thanks

I turn before I neck up to make the false shoulder. I only turn to just a bit past where the new shoulder would end of being. This way to eliminate any possibility of a donut forming.
Others will have their way. You just need to find what works best for you.

When you "neck-up" at least 1/2mm as to 6.5mm you REALLY push ALL the imperfections from the INSIDE of the neck walls to the OUTSIDE of the neck walls and turn off those imperfections. Now you have as uniform neck wall thickness as you can reasonably get.. That is why I do it that way. Actually, now-a-days, I have DJ's Brass Service do all that and Hydroform. Easy and literally no more expensive than doing your own fireforming, once components and barrel wear is taken into consideration..

Jim I just done about 50 rounds by just turning the necks then run them in my bushing die with a 260 bushing loaded them with 450 primers 34 gr. of R-15 and 90 gr. bullets jammed they came out 3 thou. longer than with the false shoulder. So I will keep an eye on the web.

Joe if you turn necks use where you stop the turner as a shoulder it will hold the case back along with a long seated bullet about .020. Never use a 450 primer for fire forming, use a federal jim

Maybe I am doing it all wrong.
I don't fire-form in my match barrel. I have an old barrel from my PPC days that was chambered with the same reamer as my match barrel. If I didn't have this I would surely get DJ to Hydroform for me. I've seen the operation first-hand and he does great work.
My 6BR brass goes thru the 6.5 expander die first. Then, using a Redding 6BR Competition Neck Die and a .266 bushing i carefully set up until I get stiff but reliable bolt close on the false shoulder.
After getting the false shoulders done I have my Stiller neck turner set to turn down into the false shoulder to eliminate future donuts.
At this point I load them with any old 6mm bullets I have laying around and some powder I don't really use much for fire-forming. I've never lost a piece of brass doing this but I've lost some blue box brass. They cracked where the old juncture of neck-shoulder was. Apparently it was a poor lot of brass (even Lapua has them).
Once they are fire-formed I always anneal with the Bench-Source and trim with the Giraud.

Isn't 34gr a bit "Spicy" for a fire form load?

How much are you taking off the necks?

The necks are 266 and I'm taking the necks to 10 thou. The loaded round is 263!

No the 34 Gr. is fine in mine with a 90 grain bullet. That is something else I have talked to people about is that I believe the straighter your Chamber is the hotter the load you can use. I also have 300 WSM's that I can shot loads that some can't get close too.
