Dasher fire form

I never use 105 GR bullets. Flat base does a better job for me. Larry

I find it isn't about what powder, bullet, charge, but it's about the right pressure.
I've used 87's up to 115's, from fast powders to slow. Any and all work once you find the right pressure (load).

To OP.... from Varget and 105 bullets, 29 to 30-grains (depending on ambient) has worked out best for me.
Myself I seem to get best blow lengths and length consistency from fuller cases from slow powders at medium pressure.

108 Berger's .010 into the lands, 28.5 grains Varget, BR-4 primer. My fire form load....accurate enough to shoot in a match. I use the false shoulder method.

105 Noslers, 30 grains, Norma 203B, Wolf SRM, false shoulder. Did all mine at MR matches. Lost about one case out of 40, neck split.

Some where I saw a guy advertising he would form the brass for you using water hydraulics die .Might have been on the snipers hide site .Would save a lot of powder and bullets as well as barrel wear.

That would be DJ's brass service (hopefully I got the name right). He advertises on this site as well, and comes highly recommended from several shooters here.

I've hydroformed cases, but this time I am fireforming. False shouldered, annealed, Fed 205, 30.5 Varget, 105 Hunting VLD just past touching (.005 into the lands). It shot a 599 41X Saturday at 500 yards (F class target). The one 9 I got looked to be a flyer to me. Several of the 10's were my fault. The prior match was also a 599 in more challenging conditions (the 9 was my fault that time). That is 120 cases plus sighters without a lost case.

I didn't bother working up this load for accuracy, nor did I do anything other than use my existing seating depth and bumble upon a charge than gives me 2850 fps from my 30" barrel.

The best advice I got was to use soft primers for fireforming - all the difference in the world using Federal 205's

Last, but not least, split cases can be caught before firing. Look really closely at the brass just at or above the neck shoulder junction. A groove or line in the brass that runs lengthwise of the neck will split. After 2 failed cases, I got wise and inspected the rest.

Keith Glasscock,

I have a question for you based upon your reply. WHY do soft primers make a better fire formed case?

Paul

In my opinion, for what it's worth, they reduce the need for so much crush on the false shoulder. I think that is why my cases come out more consistent in blow length. On the other hand, I could just be imagining that they are more consistent, or it could be that I'm using a different lot of brass than I did before.

That isn't the only reason to use them. I am getting (seemingly) more consistent ignition than I did with 450's. That is translated as better precision at 500-600 yards and accompanying better scores at matches while fireforming.

Not arguing or doubting your own input; could you define/quantify how you arrive at gains to ignition with 205's.

Call me curious....

Reduced vertical at 600 yards. Like I said, it translates for me as better precision.

On the other hand, I could be all wet and the precision could be just me.

Let me add that I won't be using these guys for full-house loads. I don't believe that the cups are thick enough for that.

I've been using RE-15 to this point with this barrel, but I'm planning on giving load development with Varget a run in the full Dasher loads. If I can gain any temperature tolerance I'd really like that.

How many gr off varget do I use to fire form ?
With the the question you ask. I use a medium pressure load of Varget for the bullet weight that is going to be used. If get I get a well blowen out case I keep the same powder drop .if not I increase the chafe till I do. Flat base bullets in the lands works best for me. Larry

I read everything I can about the Dasher from you. I really appreciate your willingness to share all that you've learned.
