Dasher/BR/BRX for Pistol?

so Im planning on building a 500-1000 yard pistol (for fun target shooting), and Im struggling with two things, barrel length and chambering. Im between 16" and 18" for barrel length (I'd prefer a 16" but I dont know if I can push fast enough for that 1000 yard mark); and I cant decide between 6 BR, 6 BRX, and 6 Dasher. I've already got a good set of whidden collet dies for BR so Im already set up for that, but running such a short barrel compared to my 28" Im guessing Im going to need a different load then the 105s Im using and Im probably going to want some extra velocity. I've got a buddy who offered me a set of redding type S dies and brass for dasher and you can get dasher brass pretty easily but Im going to fireform anyway so brx isnt awful. So Im down a rabbit hole of choices and I need some guidance from some people who have some experience behind these set ups. All in all, Id prefer to do a standard BR on a 16" barrel but I dont know if Im setting myself up for failure when I should just run a longer barrel or go for a brx/dasher

I'm not a 100% sure but I believe if the barrel is 16" or longer it has to have a stock instead of a grip. You may want to check into this before you make your final decision.

there's a lot of 16"+ pistols you can buy on the market (heritage rough rider for instance). There's no maximum for barrel length only minimums according to the nfa

Lilja sells short barrels for XP type pistols.
There was a Specialty Pistol forum, but I think they shut it down.
They moved to a different forum. You might check around.
They do your type of shooting.

One of the problems you could face with 6br. Is it going subsonic at 1k, the dasher and 6 BrX with a near max load will work with 100+ grain bullet
that's what Im scared of, Im starting to really lean towards the brx or dasher because from everyone I've really looked at that tends to be what theyre running. I just cant decide whether I want to go for a new die set or just fire form off of what I have. I also feel like I'll barely actually shoot at 1000, its just nice to be able to take a backpack gun out to the 1000 yard range.

Well you will need MV in the upper 2700 with 100 + grain bullets to stay super sonic and maybe take in to consideration that you can get factory brass for dasher but would need to fire form BrX that could cover the cost of new dies

OK, I will give you my info with my 15" Barreled (including Muzzle brake) XP100 in 6BR with 107 SMK. it is 15" due to it is an IHMSA legal gun. 18" barrel might gain you about 100 FPS. As you see it goes subsonic before 1000 yards...

Correct and that data is with a 3000 Mv. no way are going to get 3000 with a 16 Barreled 6br.
The chart is set at 2405 Fps MV which is my chrono'd reading. that 3000 MV variation is a preset in the program. changing that makes no difference in the readings.

BUT, the only way i can get 3000 MV is with a 70gr with this gun and they shot awful!

I added, most of the people I know shooting XP's to 1000 yards are shooting the 6mm-284 with 18" barrel.

that is awesome info. Thank you so much, it looks an 18" dasher or brx is the way to go. Im probably rarely going to go to 1000 but its nice to have the option.

I've had a few 6 dashers in 15-18" barrels. They'll push 105 class bullets 2700-2750 depending on the tube and load. Never had an issue at 1000. Or even beyond. Killed a prairie dog at 1292yards in Wyoming with it.

Scroll way down to Speciality Pistols.
That should give you some ideas.

My 16” dasher is a hammer at 600 and 1000 yards!

Maybe longrangeshooting.org? The .com is dead.

I have 2 pistols chambered in 6BR. An XP-100 and a Christensen Arms. Both with 16” barrels
The XP gets V2616 with 105 hybrids,10.22 mils @1000 and still going V1290.
The CA runs V2549 with 107 SMK’s, 11.11 mils and V1226 @1000. Theoretically any how.
I have only been able to shoot them to 300 but both are outstanding, and will take them to 1000, in a couple weeks.
Hope this helps
