Twist rate for 68 grainers in 6 br

Wow we are all over the course here. 1:8 ,1:10 , 1:12 , 1:13 , 1:13.5 , 1:14. I didnt expect such a wide range here. I was figuring that there was one twist that was just perfect for those little 68's.

So is it 68's only or do you want to shoot 80's as well?

I wouldnt mind being able to shoot both but if she shoots the 68's well then there is no need for the 80's.

1-13 or 1-14" twist (depending on a few variables) would serve best for 68's if you're looking for cutting edge accuracy. If you wish to shoot 80 grainers as well, then consider 1-12" twist. The faster twist can potentially cost a teeny accuracy fee, but nothing that would ruin anybody's day for purposes other than trying to win a trophy.

If you are going to want to have the option of 68 gr. bullets with BTs I think that the little extra twist of a 13.5 has proven itself in competition. If you stick to FB, the same weight will work with a 14, but will not be hurt at all by a 13.5, so that is what I would recommend. On the other hand, many shooters claim that they want to have benchrest accuracy, and do not do the whole program that is a requirement of achieving it on a regular basis. For these folks, some of these fine distinctions will be lost in the noise.

Onehole,
For whatever this is worth, I shoot Bart's 68's gr bullets out of my Savage Model 12 Benchrest rifle that has a 1:8 twist with a 29" barrel. Is use VVN133 powder and that combo of bullet/powder/rifle has given me the best results over the past 2.5 years and since I bought this rifle new. Just gotta find what you particular rifle likes the the best. Ironically, this rifle also likes to shoot Sierra 107's being pushed by Varget for a very close second. That alone tells me that "conventional" twist recommendations doesn't always work the best.

I own the same exact gun and could not get the results i wanted out of the 105-107's so i dropped down to the 80gr fb and she is like a dream come thru. I havent shot the heavies any farther than 200yards so maybe im not giving them a fair shake.

Out to 300 yards the 68's will run better ballistics then the 80 grain pills because of the velocity difference. The difference between a Berger 68 and a 80 grain bullet is a BC of .280 for the 68 and .306 for the 80 grain bullet. The velocity cancels out the difference between the two.

I would just build a 6ppc with a 14 twist if its only going to a 300 yard gun. I like the br as well but nothing beats a ppc 100-300 yards.

I don't know why you would pick a 6PPC over a 6BR for varmint hunting. I have owned both. For a varmint hunting rifle there is no difference in accuracy. You are not trying to come in first place by shooting a group that's 0.020" better than some else. I don't know what 6PPC cases cost now. You don't have to fire form the 6BR cases. About 150 fps more velocity. It's more than a 300 yd. cartridge.
