When shooting my hunting rifles my front sling stud always damages the front rest when the rifle recoils. What is the best option to prevent this? I have the colwell adjustable bag type rest.

I place the rifle on the front rest at slightly ahead of the recoil lug.

In addition, I position the rifle in the pocket of the shoulder, not on the shoulder. This pocket absorbs the recoil more consistently and effectively.

On heavy recoiling rifles, a shoulder harness with a recoil absorbing pads works very well.

Move forward or pull the stud. I ruined agood front bag that way when I wasn’t paying attention!
Absolutely the "easy button"!!!!
Removing the front stud isn't going to change anything. In fact it may improve how the rifle groups.
I would worry about the mount of pressure you're applying to the forearm with the rest more so than the stud. Especially so if your rifle's barrel isn't free floating in the stock.

This particular stock is a McMillian CF hunter. My only concern is stirpping the hole the stud screws into. Should I be concerned? I had a Winchester featherweight that did happen to.

I have an old Caldwell fire control rest that I used for hunting rifles. I let someone else use it, and got it back with the bag torn from sling stud. I’m thiking of getting one of the big center bags for load work and sighting hunting rifles.
