D1 for a Heavy 10??

I've got a really good little South Bend Heavy 10 Lathe. I plan to buy a Set-Tru type of chuck for it soon but I wish like crazy I could buy a D1-4 or whatever, spindle assembly and get an appropriate back plate and do all the work once, for the D1 setup,

Was thinking that maybe someone makes such a conversion for that popular little machine. It would also cure the spindle taper type/issue. Two birds with one stone fix. Three actually, as some had smaller spindle bores altogether.

Anybody know where such a thing might exist for purchase?

TIA!

And of course there is always the “practical machinist “ website but I figured you are already aware of it.

There was a guy in south bend IN who had worked at the south bend factory and sold parts. last i bought from him was a couple years ago. Not sure what his status is. He was not cheap but he had about everything and in NOS condition. He would have a nos spindle for that if hes still in business.

Sounds like the guy i bought a taper attachment from

You are stuck finding a NOS one which may be impossible, or a used one off ebay. I switched a 10R spindle for a 10L spindle once worked fine. 10K is the smaller machine.

I have a really nice late 80's model 10L now as a second lathe. Has the D1-4 spindle. I've tossed around the idea of selling it, but need a good replacement first. It works very well, but a PITA to dial in barrels with anything less than a half thou indicator.

If you buy an actual South Bend Heavy 10 D1-4 spindle it will still have the MT3 special taper spindle. I know because I have one. There used to be a company that advertised spindle grinding and special reducing sleeves for SBL, Monarch and other lathes that advertised in "Home Shop Machinist" magazines. I can't remember who it was and don't have those magazines anymore.
There really isn't anything wrong with the threaded spindle. It just makes it harder to run in reverse. You can machine backplates from steel for it. I fabricated a few back in the day for my old Sheldon.
