CZ457 MTR Bedding

I decided to replace the plastic pillars in my CZ457 MTR. Here is what I did.

First I drilled out the OEM pillars with a 1/2" brad pointed drill bit. I used my mill to be sure the drill was lined up perpendicular to the barrel channel.

Then I made pillars from 1/2" brass stock.

Next I opened the holes in the stock so that the assembled pillars fit freely in the stock with the recoil lug in place. I used a 1/2" end mill to open the holes where needed.

Then I put tape around the barrel to center it in the barrel channel.

Lastly I filled openings in the action with modeling clay and coated the action with Kiwi shoe polish. (continued on my next post).

Here is a pic of the barreled action ready for epoxy.

Then I put the stock in my vice and coated the holes in the stock with epoxy (Loctite 60 minute Extra Time) and the pillars. I applied the epoxy with a small artist brush. I also put epoxy in the recess in the stock for the loose recoil lug and set the lug in the epoxy. The plan is to have the recoil lug fixed to the stock.

Here is how it came out (Edited 7:49 PM)

I am happy with the pillars and the bedded recoil lug.

Note that the front 1.5" of the action is only supported by the front pillar. I am planning to bed this area with Devcon. It just does not seem right to hang a .900" diameter by 22" long barrel off of an action just sitting on a pillar. This area of the stock is already relieved so filling it with Devcon will be easy. The action does contact the wood from the ejection port on back. I may also skim bed that area.

I was checking out the bedding on my CZ457 MTR. The action sits on the two non-metallic pillars. The action is flat where it sits on the pillars. The sides of the receiver contact the stock starting about an inch behind the front of the receiver. There is considerable space around the front part of the receiver (the inletting is squared out with no contact except the pillar). See photo below.

I was thinking of bedding around the front part of the receiver and maybe the first 1" to 1-1/2" under the barrel.

Has anyone bedded a CZ457 MTR?

I have a CZ 547 MTR and had it bedded by Tom Meredith at tmstockworks1@frontier.com. He made an aluminum block with pillars to stabilize everything. Works great! Doc A.

The weather here in central Iowa has changed. Wind is running 10 to 20 mph almost every day. If we have a day where the wind lays down (10 mph or less) I will shoot it. Otherwise it may be Spring before I get to shoot it.

How much improvement in group sizes/fliers have you guys experienced after bedding the CZ?

Due to weather, I haven't been out enough to get an accurate analysis. But the action does tighten down nice and solid now.

The front pillar was cracked on mine and it wouldn't hold torque. It holds torque no problem now.

My pillar job install isn't near the quality skeel has done on his. It looks like he has the equipment and does some fine work!

With the brass pillars installed I can now torque the acrion screws to 40 to 45 in-lbs. I highly recommend replacing the OEM screws with higher strength screws from Pete's Pillars.
