CZ455 Varmint Precision Trainer

G'day all,

Im considering getting the CZ455 VPT. Anyone had any issues with it? I plan on getting it bedded as soon as It arrives.

Any and all opinions are welcomed.

Most 455's need some tweaking right out of the box, at least this has been my experience

With my VPT I found that that the Yo Dave kit did just fine - lt has to be the bargain of the century in that application. Our first attempt with it was dead reliable, but scary light. Our second effort settled out nicely at 12.5 oz.

We haven't done any stock work as accuracy has been satisfactory as is. YMMV.

I run a 455 with a Lilja barel and Mcmillan stock and it spits darts. I did bed action and floated barrel. I have a Yo Dave trigger kit and its a bit creepy but does fine. I would have preferred a Timney but I could not get it with the trigger pull weight I wanted.

I have shot the VPT before and they are real nice.

I bought a CZ455 Trainer and built a BR stock for it. I pillared and bedded it. It's a little tricky because you have to grind away half the front pillar because of the magazine clip assembly. It shoots great on some days and just good on other days. It likes Fed Ultra Match ammo. I made a large target, zeroed at 50 yds and recorded POI out to 200 yds. went home and created a MOA Chart out to 200 yds at 5 yd interviles. So I figure I got this, right. Wrong, the next time I went out it was cooler and less humid. it shot at least 1 MOA different when you got out to 150 yards plus. Anyway Temperature and Humidity have a lot to do with 22 rimfire shooting, IT CHANGES EVERYTHING. Attached is a pic of the stock I made and it made a big difference on accuracy.

What sorta tweaking?

I plan on getting a new trigger for it.

Some sort of trigger job is what you need first, then bedding, check the chamber and crown for burrs, also make sure the bolt guide is not preventing the barrel from seating firmly against the action, check torque on barrel grub screws also

I am very familiar with CZ .22's.

Based upon my experience only-

See how it shoots before pillaring and bedding. You MAY be pleasantly surprised.
As to trigger, I found replacing the spring for less than $1.00 with an ACE Hardware old #144 got me consistently to 10 oz. pull. There is some creep, which I learned to like since it got me pretty close to a two stage trigger. As stated above, the pillar near the magazine needs to be cut away.

Have fun with the tiny ball bearing that goes between the spring and the trigger assembly when removing and reinstalling the trigger. It will launch on you and might be lost forever. You can get replacements at CZ or go back to ACE and get a few replacements (just about the same size and completely functional for way under $1.00 each. Fastenal also has similar springs and ball bearings.

First thing I would do is have the chamber and crown checked by a gunsmith who has a bore scope, if that checks out next thing to check is headspace, then trigger and bedding

Well if you buy a VPT add a Shilen or Lilja barrel and, pay a rimfire knowledgeable smith to headspace it... you could have purchased a better rifle. CZ rifles are fantastic for the price! However, getting carried away with them often leads to regret and financial loss.

It's easy to throw $1500+ at VPT.... a nice used 54 Anschutz can be had for the same.

I ordered a go gauge with my Lilja barrel and installed it myself no problem. I only casually compete - once or twice a season with it but with this rifle and my 2 piece rest this rifle consistently outshoots rifles that cost 2-3 times more. I am the only one that uses a 2 piece rest with most having 1 piece mechanical rests that cost more than what I originally spent on my 455 in stock form. Also, most use tuners and high dollar Eley red box when I run mixed lot Center X. Its easy to sit there and say that brand X is better than brand Y but what does it really matter. If I was to ever get serious about competing I would just start over with a build using a Stiller receiver. But from what I understood from the OP he never mentioned competing with it so the 455 would be a perfect compromise.

FWIW my 455 22lr will outshoot my brother in law's 1517 17hmr out to 75 yards. He gets me by just a hair at 100 yards but just barely so don't discount what a CZ will do.

BUY IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!

It has been my experience that the CZ's need to be pillar bedded to shoot their best. Yo dave's trigger kits usually settle at about 10-12 oz for me and are a simple bargain.I've also had good luck with Lilja's drop in barrels. 22LR and 22 Mag.

is there any videos or photo posted on pillar bedding a Boyd's Tacticool or Pro Varmint stock?

Most cz's (or any sporting rimfire for that matter) will shoot between 1/2"-1" on average. Some can do better and some can be worse. You never expect to buy a sporting rifle and expect it to shoot one holers all day long.

I have tons of experience with cz 455's, cz 452's, and Anschutz 64's (many others too). I use to do about 100 Lilja drop in builds a year on the 455's. To make a long story short, a drop in barrel will be perfectly fine from a safety point but not from an accuracy point. A Lilja uses a Benz chamber which is a limiter IMO and a setback on the shoulder may be required to get all of the accuracy you can out of it. A drop in using a cone breech will need tuning after indexing for it to extract properly. Again a set back might be required to get all you can out of it. I finally just started custom fitting barrels to them and permanently attaching them doing away with the set screws. The difference is easily seen both in overall accuracy and how less picky they are with ammo. I personally prefer to use benchmark barrels as they have been amazing in my experience. Some eye candy :).
