Cutting crown

im using Arthur Warner holders with HSS inserts in a boring bar. I'm using this insert

My tool sharpening is really rusty. My machining training was over 30 years ago so the tool grinding for crowning anyway is out

What are you guys using to cut your crowns?
I'm cutting flat target crowns

I bought a used set of bits off of ebay, this one I use on my crowns I lightly sharpened it after receiving it. Don't know if it is exactly right for the job but seems to work I have basically no machine shop training. The crown in the picture is just a stub I practiced on

Brownells part # 080-586-750WB with correct brass pilot. Also have their lathe tool bit and it also works well.

I can make a straight turning tool out of the Arthur Warner 5 piece kit work well for a target crown. My machining experience is minimal.

Same thing I do. Grind the tool bit, set a skosh above center and cut from the bore out. Polish with some emery and cutting oil.

Tim,
If you're cutting recessed crowns with sharp edges on the lands and grooves you can get by with a lot of different cutters as long as they are really sharp. If you want to cut 11 degree crowns and break the edge on the rifling with a 45 degree chamfer then I find it's best to use a small boring bar. I use a high speed steel bar with the edge about 3/16 inch wide and sharpen it with a lot of angle to clear the smaller bores. Another tool for putting a chamfer on a bore is a sharp countersink, but be careful.

I've been using a small boring bar with a hSS insert. Cutting a flat target crown. It's doing good. The inserts I have are getting a little dull
So I thought I would see what you guys were using

Take those inserts and lay them cutting side down on a piece of 500 grit wet=dry and lightly move the insert around in a circle applying pressure to it...
They do sharpen up nice that way......

Short 3/8" shank micro 100 boring bar and spin at high speed. Easily touched up with diamond...

I use Arthur Warner tooling and have compared HSS and carbide. I like the convienience of carbide on a recessed crown to get it shaped and angles in place, like on a live varmint or hunting rifle, but always use HSS on the finish cut.
