custom verses 40 x

I found some reworked 40 action on a light varmint type rifle in 6 mm ppc for about 1000 $
this includes a hart barrel, mcmillion stock l v class ,bases and rings ,a non 40x trigger, it is a hart I am sure in 2 once style.
I have a very limited budget .the barrel has about 800 rounds through it.gun will be used 95 0/0 of time shooting grounhogs.
now I also found a nice custom ,hall action rifle in 6 mm ppc for about 1300 with about 1400 rounds through if.it also is a light varmint rifle class.
any thoughts on this the rifles are at bob white sporting goods in new jerrsy.

FWIW >Hall actions are still used in competition by some of the best in the BR game. The 40x's have not made an appearance in a decade or three. Bob is GTG.

Never had a custom but I had alot of 700/40x and have some top winning rifles even a state record!

The groundhogs won't know the difference either way. Since you're dealing with Bob, he probably has some previously-owned varmint rifles that might be a better choice for groundhog shooting, depending on the conditions where you normally hunt. The 6PPC can be deadly accurate but doesn't have the range or splat factor of some of the big .22s, nor is it as quiet as some of little .17s and .20s.

If you're planning to compete (seriously) in benchrest, the price of the rifle will be dwarfed by the cost of rests, loading equipment, and components (including barrels), so figure that into your budget plans.

Either is a good choice..... so that being said, and given that you're on a budget, I'd recommend buying the 40x and take the $200 difference and put it towards a great scope, and or brass, etc. The chucks won't know the difference if you have good enough glass to see them and hit em. ;-) WD

buy the 40x less money and wear and tear

40x...groundhogs don't care. I have several customs and several 40x's. The customs are former competition guns, mostly BR. Never had a groudhog complain about being killed by either. At that level it don't make a lick of difference and don't worry about resale. The 40X will keep its value. It is the barrel that will quit.

A 6 PPC is fine for out to 500, as is a 22PPC. Just run some varmint bullets and have at it. I do it all the time.
