Custom Ruger No 1 221 Fireball

A little over a year ago I was at Keith Kilby's house ruminating about a new build. Keith is my gunsmith, but more importantly a shooting and hunting buddy and good friend. He is the head smith at Wyoming Armory in Cody, WY. A man of many talents including a Master Bladesmith. Keith had done several projects for me over the years including re-barreling a Ruger No 1 in 220 Swift to a 22-250 and restoring the stock and re-blue (Keith has done quite a few No 1's and they all shoot). Another one was an original 1885 low wall that had been sporterized sometime in the 1950's. New wood from Treebone Carving, Douglas barrel, chambered in 218 Mashburn Bee, case colored etc. sweet looking and they both shoot. Keith mentioned that he had 221 Fireball back in the day and it was fun to shoot and very accurate. I said let's go for it. Keith was able to find a No 1 at a reasonable price and what follows will be the project from beginning to end.

I told Keith I really want a cheek piece butt stock (love the look on an 1885...). Treebone Carving does have a pattern No 1 with a check piece, but Keith wanted to do it a little different. He took a old regular No 1 butt stock and added in a cheek piece to it (using a wood block and bondo) for Treebone Carving to use as a pattern. The fore end was ordered with inlet for action but the rest a square block. I talked to George at Treebone and sent him a check for a nice piece of fiddleback walnut and a steel butt plate. George Petersen and Treebone Carving are the best!!!

Ordered a Brux barrel 12.5 twist 219/224 heavy target contour (standard target would have been a better choice, you need to keep the shank at a max of ~ 1.200 but it got worked out, thanks Brux). JGS SAMI reamer, JARD trigger 1 lb and a LAW safety. Tally rings, Leupold VX III 8.5-25x50 LR with varmint hunter reticle and a one off Kilby Special Quarter Rib.

Someone will ask "targets". I will be doing a separate thread on load development in the small stuff section, but it will be a little while...still a few things I want to test...it shoots!

Also wanted to post links to Wyoming Armory and Treebone Carving.

I guess to start I'll post a picture of the "Egg" from whence the chicken hatched :)

More fore end and quarter rib (notice the wider flat fore end to ride a bag nice). After completing the quarter rib, Keith mounted a scope and had me go to the range to make sure the rib and scope was on target...it was...never a doubt :)

I'm curious. What range to you intend to shoot this at? I was thinking about building a 221 Fireball as a dedicated 100yd target rifle, sort of a mini short range 6BR (if I ever get any disposable income again.)

Nicely done on the project.

I am currently conducting comprehensive load testing and will have data out to 300 yards. I will be posting those results when I'm done.

Excellent work. I have had excellent accuracy with H- CFE-BLK rifle powder in 221 fireball. before I used reloader 7 or little gun.
