Custom M14/M1A stock

I bought a wood stock off ebay, I was excited because it had a rubber recoil pad on it. I was not excited to learn that it had been cut down and was actually a chinese stock. I did not want to toss the stock or try to pawn it off on someone else. So I thought I would see if I could make it into something I can use. I cut off the butt, and spliced in a new piece. I used a finger joint and some dowels to reinforce the joint. It is all epoxied together. I used a couple rasps and a small plane to do the shaping. This is still a work in progress, but I am pleased so far.

The new wood is poplar, but it actually seems to be of better quality than what the original stock was made from.

I intend to coat the stock in an epoxy resin to help harden the soft woods. I will then paint it all a solid color and somehow add a texture to the finish. I have not quite finished shaping the grip, but it is close. I also will not need an adjustable cheek riser as the cheek weld is the perfect height for my scope.

I ordered this "penetrating Epoxy sealer" from Rockler. It seems like a good fit for my needs.

I use the total boat penetrating sealer. Don't mix more than you need. It goes exothermic pretty quick

No real progress here, but the epoxy is cured. I’ll be sanding it down tomorrow, and I need to decide on a paint. I was originally thinking a black scheme. But I really like the color on my Tikka super varmint.

I couldn’t find a green I liked. Just going to stick with black. I fitted a QD cup for the sling stud. Sprayed a couple coats if matte black for a base and sanded out some imperfections. It’s snowing here, so I have to wait to spray the final coats.

Waiting for pint to dry now.

If I have time later at home I will paint the ferrule black and epoxy it to the stock. Then drop in the rest of the metal and install the recoil pad.
