I‘ve liked the idea of a joint in a normal Kevlar stock for total separation near or through the pistol grip to reduce the footprint for transportation, and maybe someone has seen something.
The only “normal” stock I’ve seen with a well executed joint at the pistol grip was a super fancy custom gun and the gunsmith machined a tapered dovetail joint sized to exactly match the stock lines. When it’s slid together it just looked like a steel 1/4” line through the pistol grip - I’ve never seen another so maybe it’s not practical.
Someone had a video a year or two ago that I cannot find, where the guy uses a Hornady lock-n-load bushing imbedded in a cut through the pistol grip. A 1/4 turn and it comes apart - kind of a cool idea. I never did see an update as to how well it worked. It seems a simple spring loaded tapered pin would keep it from rotating.
The foldable AR style stocks have a rather simple mechanism, which is probably the path of least resistance for what I’m thinking of if combined with a removable hinge pin, but that’s not very elegant.
It would be super interesting, or at least a conversation starter, if the pistol grip had a split joint, and a bolt identical to what the rifle uses is used sticking out of the butt end of the stock, and it’s simply inserted and rotated into place with a heavy detent or spring loaded lever or pin to maintain alignment.
