Custom FL Die

Hi,

Can anyone suggest where I can order a custom FL sizing Die?

I just chamber a new barrel with FTR Reamer from PTG and found that my Redding Type S FL Die doesn't work with this chamber.

There are others but it's late and there all I can think of off the top of my head.

Have you thought of a small base die? http://www.sinclairintl.com/reloading-equipment/reloading-dies/rifle-dies/redding-small-base-type-s-full-length-dies-prod36568.aspx

I had contact customer service at Redding by no helpful information about them.

Normally, Small Base Die was using with Semi-Auto but this chamber was specific order custom Reamer from Dave@PTG for competition in F-TR.

I am having Scott at SFS build my new die right now and had Kiff send him the ream, since Kiff made your chamber ream he can grind you a resizing die ream for who ever makes your die, Neil Jones and some others requires you to send in three cases that have been fired three times from your chamber. You need to decide who you want to make your die and they will tell you what they want you to do.

This extra expense and trouble is why I like to work from a sized case for chamber reamer body dimensions. If you were doing your own chambering, it would be easier and cheaper to sell the reamer and spec out a new one. Another place to get a custom die is Hornady.

I am surprised that the Redding die does not work, as I have an FT/R reamer coming from PT&G and I assumed I could use the Redding die I have on the shelf and has worked well for other 308 chambers.

Can you tell us what the problem is?

Thanks

Hey Wayne:

www.warnertoolcompany.com

What sets the WTC die apart from all others is the quality of material and machine work, unbelievable tolerances, endless number of inserts to take advantage of one die body and the straightness of your brass once its been sized in the die. I use inserts for full length sizing and another set for neck sizing. Unlike bushing dies, the WTC insert sizes the entire neck. There is quite simply no other die made that compares.

I'm having a set made at Neil Jones right now , $400 for a bushing bump die and an in-line seating die . It's a four month wait too ! I like the micrometer adjustments on the Jones' dies , where WTC uses shims . Both are expensive , but worth the money . You only have to cry once :'( !

Give Mark Spencer a call.
He sells a custom F/L bushing die for around $150.00

Why wouldn't you use the reamer you used on your chamber ? I know the PPC guys use there reamer to make the custom FL/ bump bushing dies.

Because the same size reamer as chamber would do nothing. It has to be undersized to resize brass properly.

I have a new reamer from PTG in Win. Match profile, with a different freebore, that I am having a barrell done with now. I use the Redding Type S die. Looking at my reamer diagram verses a sized case, all the deminsions are less on the case. Wouldn't that case fit in a chamber done with that reamer? I too would rather be able to use my Redding die.

One little thing worth looking at is whether, when you checked to see if a FL die is working, the case you used was fired with a hot enough load so that in unsized condition it gave a tight feel when it was rechambered. If you only fired the case once, with a moderate pressure load, the case will not have fully taken the dimensions of the chamber. To find out what your die does with a tight case, figure out how to just size the neck enough to hold a bullet, and fire the same case 2-3 times with a stout (but safe load) till the bolt fells a bit too snug when you chamber the fired case. Make sure that your bolts locking lugs are properly greased when you do this, lest you gall the lugs. Set your die for the desired bump of this case, and see if the shoulder and .3 above the head diameters change after sizing.

I shoot moderately hot loads in my 6PPCs and it is pretty typical that on the first firing of a previously fire formed case, that my FL die (that is very little smaller than the chamber) does nothing but size the case neck. Once the cases have grown to the chamber, the die reduces them as it should.
