Custom Bolt Stop/ Release for a 40X Rimfire Action

I am attempting to locate a gunsmith who can install a side bolt stop/ release
on a Rem 40X rimfire action.

There are several smiths who routinely perform the installation on Rem 700's & 40X centerfire actions,
but none want to perform the work on a rimfire 40X action.

Any suggestions for a smith or first hand knowledge is appreciated.

thanks,
Larry

Although the smiths I have talked to have not specifically stated their concerns,
I am guessing either they have NOT done one for a rimfire action before OR they are
concerned that after the install, the bolt won't have sufficient rear travel to eject dependably.

thanks for your reply

CATMAN;
You are right about not much room. The catch has to be moved to the back of the release and clearance needs to be ground on the bolt handle. Not made for pretty but works very well.

Clearance and heat treat , just my opinion . If it's an option have a 1/4" hole drilled further back , install o-ring on a custom made button that can be used as a bolt stop .

No, the clearance is ground on the end of the bolt that is soldered to the body. When the bolt starts to cam forward the bottom of it hit the bolt stop pin in the lug raceway.

rayjay;
I'm thinking it would have to be very creative because the stop is in the lug raceway. After pushing the stop down it would have to be extracted to let the bolt lug pass. I have no idea how that can be accomplished. With careful pruning and made of steel instead of delrin mine could be made a fair amount smaller. I may work on a smaller version over the winter. The small push button or pin could be just behind the bolt lug raceway. On the tang in other words. Hole in the tang angled forward and down.

I had an opps moment when drilling a later 40X receiver for the coil spring bolt stop return spring and have been thinking about a 'repair' that doesn't involve welding and rebluing. If I keep thinking about it I may come up with a presentable solution. The opps was several years ago :)

Isn't it amazing how easy it is to screw something up and nearly impossible to repair it? Life ain't easy. Wayne

Contact Gene Davis, Pleasantville, OH. He has a lot of experience building rifles with 40x rimfire actions and he may be able to help you out.

Good idea. Gene did the work on my 40X mini-palma. You won't find a better 40x gunsmith; and a true gentleman.

I only broke out on part of the drilled hole. The best bet would be to drill out the entire hole and then set a round piece of steel or brass into the hole and flush with the upper surface of the tang. Interference fit or peen the peg to lock it in place. Then file flush with the upper surface.

This is on a CF 40x that I float the tang on anyway. I just wanted to get away from the pita torsion spring. I had a nice hole drilled that was just a tiny bit shallower than the hole in my early RF 40X. Couldn't be satisfied with good enough.

It's almost irrelevant. The action has deep pitting on the front rec ring that was under the stock line of the 40X stock but above the stock line of the current BR stock. Just a good project action for a hacker.

I sent my 40X 22LR off to Chad Dixon of Long Rifles, Inc back in 2010 for a Nesika Bay side bolt release installation. Those were installed on my custom Anglin 700 .223 varmint rifle and my GA Precision 700 .308 tactical rifle. After Chad had the action in hand, he determined that there was insufficient space for the release. I guess neither of us were thinking clearly about the locking lugs location versus the centerfire's. I ended up with a new Mark Chanlynn barrel, PTG bolt, new pillar bedding, Jewel HVR trigger, Cerakote finish on metal, and paint job for the McMillan A-5 stock...but no side bolt release. :(
