Custom Barrel Mfg's

I want to order my first custom barrel for a Model 70 7mm 08 and I live in Foley Alabama. I am considering two different mfg's but am open to other suggestions.

One I am considering is Bartlein Barrels in Jackson, WI. The positive with this company that some customers have set several world records with their barrels. The negatives are that it will take 5-6 months to get a barrel and they will not thread the barrel.

The other company is Lija Barrels in Plains, Montana. The negative is that I don't know how accurate their barrels are. The positives are that they seem to have a good plant from looking at their web site, they will thread the barrel for an additional $40.00, and they can produce the barrel in about a month.

Like I said, this will be my first custom barrel and I may not even be looking for things that I should be. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You can go to "Bruno's Shooter Supply" and PROBABLY get a Krieger right away. You can go to "Grizzly" Products and PROBABLY get a Bartlein right away. Then take the barrel blank to a riflesmith and have him chamber it and fit it to your rifle. Depending on how busy he is, you might get a barrel fit in less than a month>>>possibly sooner. So between the 2 distributors and a 'smith, you should have your rifle done in a month or less..

Myself, I'm a Lilja fanboy. I've been to the Lilja building for a tour. Definitely cool and it's only a 3 hour drive up north from home.

Thanks for all of the help. I was a little nervous about choosing a mfg. Think I will go with Lilija. They seem to be top notch and are very friendly but so are most people from Montana. Chappy, sounds like you live in God's country. Although I live in Foley, AL, I spent most of my life in Oregon. I have a long way to travel to hunt elk now but it is one of my favorite hunts.

Indeed I do. This year was one of the best years we've had elk hunting wise. 6 elk in the freezer between 5 people. We were so overloaded with elk that we ended up giving away all the deer we got as well to people who need it more than we did.

The only good barrels are made in Wisconsin. Try Brux, they set more records.

Much as I hate to admit it, Bob is right. ;) [br]
From Boots to Ernie Stallman with Brux, Bartlein and Krieger in between, Wisconsin is rifle barrel Mecca. You would not go wrong with any of the big three above, but I am also partial to Brux barrels.

Don't forget Rock Creek.

Brux - Lodi, Wisconsin. Bartlein, Krieger and Brux have all been used to set National Records. The only determining factor should be which one you can get the quickest.

Regardless, I use Brux exclusively because Ken Liebetrau has always dealt with me fairly and as quickly as he could possibly manage.

Their barrels are lazers.

If they were still available here , an Obermeyer would be my first choice with Schneider and Krieger level pegging for second spot.

Mike.

No complaints about my Criterion barrel - yet another Wisconsin (Germantown) barrel maker ;D

If you are willing to venture outside the box, you might consider Hawk Hill in NC. New but might be willing to work with you on price and time. No personal experience, just throwing out options.

I have used 2 hawk hills and have 5 more on order. Fast turn and very accurate.

Norm and Ken at Brux are great to deal with and there barrels are super, used several over the last 5 years.

Why is it that there are so many barrel makers in Wisconsin? Something in the water ;)
