Custom Actions, Carbon Steel

Does anyone have a list of custom action manufactures that can do a custom or premium grade action in Carbon steel?

I would like to build a custom hunting rifle in a satin blueing with selective French Gray.

Pardon my ignorance but why carbon steel. Is it because it is more resistant to wear? I have had issues with bolt lug galling on stainless. Never C/M. Mike

Anything rubbing against stainless has to have lube or it will gall, action threads, lugs, brakes, screws, all threads. However I think most bolts are not stainless.(still need lube).

One of the favorite stainless steels for high strength applications is 17-4 PH stainless. It is also on of the very worst materials for galling when running against itself.
I have had to deal with it a lot in surgical instruments that are carefully cleaned and steam sterilized. Very clean material makes it gall even worse.
17-4 needs to be 2 very different hardnesses if 2 parts run against each other otherwise a dissimilar material should be used.
When the application permits Nitronic 60 can be used since it was designed to resist galling.

304 stainless is another material that is bad about galling when used in threaded fasteners...
All the gory details can be found in the Carpenter Stainless Steel Blue Book.
It is an excellent educational source for learning how to select and fabricate stainless steels. Just look for the down loadable pdf at the Carpenter Steel site.

I have galled the lugs of a chrome moly 700 Rem action. I did it with a round that was hard to chamber and both the bolt and receiver had just been cleaned and left dry with no lube.

IMO...chromoly is best suited material for an action.
Not according to Jim Borden. I bought a used CM Rimrock off a guy in FL. Asked Borden if he made many of them. He said only 6. I asked him are there any advantages of CM. He said actually there are a few disadvantages using CM. He said the biggest is that they do not stay as straight while being machined full hard as he called it. He said one minor advantage it has is that it stretches a little less under load than SS, but not enough to be worthwhile.

I like my Pierce.

Dunno, heard Satterlee was hard to get actions from, but that may have been from a person or persons that had a grudge against him. I'm sure you know the person and the forum I'm talking about. Looks like a nice action though, no question about that.

I can't speak for others. My receiver came from him after my check cleared. About 10 days from my going to the post office with a check until I had the receiver in my hand. Maybe I was lucky.

Not for nothing but you may very well get pretty much what you are looking for with SS and just having everything teflon coated. Properly done, it looks exactly like rich, satin bluing and way more durable.

I sure like to know what brand of Teflon coating you're talking about, 'cause I've investigated many and none come close to the look and durability of slow rust bluing. ANY coating will chip, and as far as being 'durable', none come close to slow rust. Slow rust has already stood the 'test of time'. The modern coatings are just beginning.

You might want to look harder.
First off, I'm not alking about DIY stuff here.
I have no idea how many guys do this, but the guy that builds my BR guns is the most anal human on the planet. Check the site for Herb Coates, HC Precesion, as a for instance.
He does all the teflon for Hart barrel which are not exactly cavalier about who they entrust anything Jim Hart builds, which include a lot of high end, hard use, hunting rifles.
Couple of the guys that shoot our winter BR league also have guns built and teflon'd by Herb and they are quite impressive.
I suppose you can compromise about anything but, damn, these things look good.
I've been told that a lot of finish and durability depend greatLy on metal prep and he goes to extremes in that department.
