Custom action vs. Remington action

I’m in the process of building a .308 and would like to use my Krieger barrel that is already mated up to a trued Remington action. Should I used the trued Remington action or should I switch to a custom 700 footprint action and if so can I re-use the Krieger Barrel without headspace issues?

I would use what you got all you can till you have a good idea where your going and then get a custom that will do what you need/want.
Keeping the trued Remington will give you somthing to work with while the custom is being built?

To answer your question, the answer is no. Not all "700 footprint" custom actions use the same tenon thread. And the headspace would need to be adjusted and set if they did, which might mean pulling the barrel and chucking it up in the lathe to turn the shoulder (since I'm assuming the barrel is already engraved for the cartridge). Or at very least, hand reaming the chamber

You've already put the money into the 700, truing it, fitting the barrel to the action, etc. Get a nice stock and see what it will do. I have rifles built on factory 700 actions that shoot extremely well. They give me no reason to consider changing the action.

That’s kind of what I was thinking at this point.

If you did not have an action yet and you were debating truing up a factory 700 vs. buying a custom 700 footprint action, then I would tell you "GO WITH A CUSTOM!" Simply because by the time you spend the money on getting a factory 700 'close' to the tolerances of a custom, you wont be far off in price vs. just buying a custom in the first place and the factory 700 still wont be as nice or as strong.

But in your case you've already spent the money on a factory 700 so shoot what you got and have fun :)

So your already going in the trued 700 direction , a little expensive to back up ( unless you do the work yourself ) use the trued action and when the accuracy starts to erode get your custom action ready and purchase a new barrel . If your 700 was trued there's no guarantee it'll just swap barrel and headspace correctly onto a custom . Was the receiver threads opened and recut ? Receiver face was cut so how could you expect a swap . What I'm saying is it'll cost good money to redo .
Good luck and start shopping for a custom . It depends on how much you shoot and how you shoot cause the barrel will be downhill at aprx 2000 rounds

Remington barrels seldom head space correctly on another Remington let alone anything else. And then there there's the possible issue of a different thread pitch on a custom..

Yeah the only reason I went with the trued action in the first place is, I did some haggling with a gun smith friend and he trued the action and fit the barrel for me in exchange for some work on my end.

If you do not need the "rig" right now, sell what you have and use the money toward a custom. Sounds as though you really want the custom. The barrel would have to be head spaced to the "new" action.

Yeah the build as it sits is like this.

McMillan A5 stock
Badger Ordnance dm bottom metal
Badger Ordnance 20 moa scope rail
Badger Ordnance scope rings
Night Force ATACR
Timney 2lb Trigger
24” Krieger Barrel
Trued Remington action

So I am going for the custom gun, just not sure if I wanted to break the action and barrel apart since they have been head spaced and such.

You went top notch on everything else.... don’t skimp on the action. Or you WILL regret it.

It’s not been assembled yet, other then the barrel and action, like I stated, it was in a previous build. I think I’ve decided to do the action and see what my smith thinks about the head space. The action I’m leaning toward uses the same thread.

I just feel like I’ve built a top notch rifle and skimmped on one part. The whole point of this build was to do exactly what I wanted.

Dont worry about it. Just shoot it. I'm sure it will be accurate. You can change actions at any time.

If you time the bolt handle and trigger properly, the 700 can operate very smoothly. Dont forget to bed the scope rail to the action and lap the scope rings.

And you can dress them up to look pretty good. Here's one of my customized factory 700 actions in an AG Composites carbon Fiber stock. Very accurate rifle.

I called Stiller. They have the action I would use in stock and ready to ship. That was my first thought too

I think the stiller actions have a coned bolts. If so, the barrel would have reworked. If not you may still have to rework it. I would shoot your Remington. When look for the custom later. The custom action are smoother and have a lighter bolt lift.
