Custom Action longevity again!

If you worry about action longevity, you have too much time on your hands and not enough time on the line. A keg of Vihta Vouri weighs or used to weigh 44 pounds. I've bought a couple of them back when you could get a deal on powder. And no, my actions aren't worn out yet.

Yea I know it's been discussed. So assuming things are kept relatively clean and lubed. And don't ask which bolt lube! So let's take any of the 700 clone actions. In a middle cartridge. Not light 223 or magnums. Short 308, long 30'06. 5000, 10,000 a gazillon? What starts to wear out first and what is considered worn out. I know Barrels are like car tires but how many miles do you have on you action. Also for longevity stainless or cm. Thoughts? Mike
Mike ...how long it lasts is up to YOU,,,,if you drag it thru the dirt and dont clean or lube it properly then not very many/long,,,,but if you care for and use it properly there are many out there that have hundreds of thousands of round count,,,,the thing that does wear out is the main spring and the extractor,,,that is why back in the old days when benchrest shooters used Remington actions the extractor was changed to M-16 style,,,,the Rem factory extractor is usually good for 100,000 pulls max,,,so rather than have it fail during a match this was changed preemptively ,,,,any piece of machinery needs maintaince to function and wear properly,,,,,for instance a car can go many miles when cared for or not make it to the state line if abused ,,the same applys to a firearm,,,,Roger

The saddest part of aging ..... not only do I not remember HOW ..... I even forget WHY!!!! :(

Has anyone ever done a hardness test on an action with 100K rds on it, or would this be a moot point?
I'm pretty sure heat treatment doesn't wear out.

The world is full of old Mausers, Springfields, Enfields, Krags and the like that have been used for many decades and have seen countless rounds cycled through them. Many of them have been ridden hard and put away wet for a good portion of their existence and they are still as structurally sound as the day they saw their proof round at the factory. Sure, ejectors can break and springs get sacked over time, but the core integrity of the action has a life span much greater than ours. I've rehabbed quite a few Mausers (commercial and military) and Springfields over the years, some of them in pretty rough shape at the beginning of the process, and I haven't seen one yet that is 'worn out'. Modern custom actions, given better materials and process controls, should last even longer in theory. In any event, I'd love to have the time and the resources required to wear one out. Or try, anyway . . . .

TRUTH.

One Harley is worth a lot of guns. And a three Harleys are a bass boat!!! To fish!!! I bought a pair of waders for $60 and catch all the fish I want :)

Aw, that's just not true! If you caught all the fish you want, you wouldn't have to fish anymore! And it's hard to wade 80 miles offshore to catch a tuna!:rolleyes:My Daddy told me I didn't even need waders, when I was a kid. Jeans and sneakers are just fine! You'll dry out and if you get cold, just sit on the bank for a while.:p Now, I'm all growed up and I buy whatever I want! Well, at least what I can get past my wife.;)

Thanx for your kind words.
