Current reproduction 1885 Winchesters

Some years back I bought a Winchester 1885 miroku gun chambered in 222 rem. Was a short run from the factory never seen many of the 222 for sale. Threw a 6x24 scope on it i had laying around. After first time out I sent the trigger out to get worked over by Lee shaver factory trigger was way to heavy. The gun is surprisingly accurate one of the best shooting 222 I have played with.

Steve Meacham scratch built (he even made 1885 actions) DST version of the '85 in .40-3.25 Sharps Straight, and a Ron Long original action DST as well in 38-55 that was a prize rifle that Jim Feren was presented with for winning the Coors Schuetzenfest about 1986. Engraved with Presentation grade wood. I spotted for Jim at a couple of the matches.

Tell me about your 1885 Winchester. Who made it, what CF cartridge was it built for, how accurate is it, and would you choose the same one again~?

Here is a field test of a modern 1885 Win repro that has a nice history of the 1885 Win single shot:

I have a Browning 1885 "Traditional Hunter" in 45-70 Win. I ordered it probably 25 years ago and got really lucky the wood is breathtakingly beautiful. This model has an octigon barrel, crescent steel butt plate and tang rear sight. It was built by Miroku and the quality is amazing. It also shoots really good, .75" 3-shot groups at 100yds with tang sight.

I have a Steve Meacham high wall that I built up in .40/65. Douglas barrel, 16" twist. The stock was made from Bastogne walnut that was cut the year I was born. Stu Harvey did the barrel, which is blackened stainless steel. I did the wood work and James Tucker, the checkering. We have had an 1885 Browning, Miroku, for 20+ years and it always shot well. They are also pretty guns to look at.

I have a Winchester 1885 high wall (Miroku) chambered in 6.5 CM. The black walnut is awesome. This rifle is more like furniture...should be displayed on the living room wall (wife says no!).
It is unfired due to current snow levels. What sort of accuracy should I expect with factory ammo and handloads?

I bought my first Browning 1885 about 1989, a 22-250, rebarreled it to 32-40 and shot a few yrs of Coors matches til they krapped out as the sponsor. Sold it a few yrs ago, kicking my butt a bit on having done that. PIcked up one in 223 in 1991, still have it, and one that was a Winchester re-branded 2010(?) Shot Show special in 300H&H, took 18mos to get. I prefer them to the #1, probably because I like hammerguns better, and those guns all shot better out of the box than the #1's I've owned. It's getting pretty pricy on those guns these days, not the kind of gun you can just grab a reasonably action and swap barrels on like they used to be.

I have the same or similar 1885. High Wall with Octagon barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor. Mine shoots half MOA using the same loads I run in my match gun. 140 grain Burger Hybrids, 40.5 grains of H4350, Lapua small primer brass and CCI 450 primers. Been a while since I tried it by I think the Hornady 140 grain Match Ammo was close to that. The only problem with the gun is that it is too pretty to take out in the woods and beat up.
