Current production Mauser action??

Hoping I can get some help here.
I want to build a classic style hunting rifle, you know, with real walnut, not plastic or fiberglass.

Does anyone know who produces a modern 98 Mauser action? I prefer new steel/metallurgy and tolerances but the old classic Mauser design.

The Kimber CF rifles are pretty much a clone of the old M70 pre-'64 Winchester, which itself is a close copy of the Mauser 98; claw extractor, coned breach, controlled round feed. Solid design, decent trigger, choice of wood or synthetic, seems like a good candidate to me.

I have both original M70's and Kimber 84M Varmint....nothing negative to comment, only positive.

Mauser still makes the model 98 in various iterations, all very expensive. Same for Demoulin in Belgium. If you want to build your own, there are plenty of surplus 98 actions everywhere.

If you're looking for a true 98 Mauser in a commercial version, the FN imported after WWII up until late 70's is the best finished and was made of modern steel. They sold both actions and complete rifles and made rifles for Browning also. You will find a lot them on custom built rifles, and can usually be had reasonable if you look around some. On the subject of "close tolerances", I don't think you'll find any that are made to current BR tolerances, just wasn't the market for them and no reason to do so. They are hunting actions and need clearance for field work. If you are okay with 98 variations, such as the M70 Win., Rick's suggestion above is a good one. Dakota Arms also made some beautiful clones of the pre-64 M70 also and are very well machined. The feature I like on the M70 over the Mauser was the coned breech. The cartridge feeds down a funnel essentially. Winchester copied this from the 03 Springfield along with a few other features and it's a big part of why the pre-64 M70 was so popular with hunters. The 3 position positive safety was another big reason and you'll pay a couple of hundred plus to get one installed on a 98 (speaking from experience).

Wow!!!
$3200 for an action. Is there another source for a good Mauser?
Look for a J.C. Higgins (Sears & Roebuck) model 51. Manufactured FN in Belgium, they have a High-Standard barrel on them and the ones I have owned have all been very accurate. The only downside to them is that the trigger design is a bit odd but it can be easily replaced with any trigger that fits a 98 Mauser.
They can be found at $350 to $550 depending on how much of a rush you are in. They are likely the best value in a 98 Mauser available.

I have had several '98's over a long period - and now down to 2. Both are Spanish actions from the 1960's and both perform quite well. One is a 243AI with a Pac-Nor barrel - my first custom rifle. Still shoots under 1/2 MOA and explodes bunnies. The other is a Parker-Hale Safari in '06, which was built "to spec" by Alfred Parker ( by it's "AP" serial number) and has tight tolerances, chambered for Norma ammo. Believed to have come to NZ as a factory sample.
Another alternative is the Montana Rifleman action ( are they still made?), Which features a Winchester type trigger on a Mauser style bolt.

I appreciate the controlled feed on the 98. The action can be cycled quietly ( without the "ping" from the magazine) and a reliable half-cock and/or safety -a benefit for hunting.

Montana is out of business. They were rough and needed work.Their idea was right, but they were never able to quite put it together.

CZ makes M-98 actions for their rifles as does Zastava. Zastava rifles have been imported by Interarms, Charles Daley, and Remington. Best bet is to find a donor rifle with a modern M-98 rifle in the configuration needed.

All that aside, the CRF M-70 is probably the best refinement of a Mauser action for a hunting rifle.

There are a few other Mauser actions in the GMA price range and up.
If you want a reasonable price and g quality the FN is the way to go. Back in the ‘90s I bought a few, like drover stated there are Sears brand gun cheap and the action says FN. People mistakenly think that they are junk. A few JC Higgins are Sako.
There is no middle ground on prices.

Thank you all for the input. This gives me some great info and several options to search.
I appreciate it.

Zastava currently makes commercial model 98's and can be had for under $600, they are very similar to the FN's I have heard that they purchased the machinery and design from FN but am not sure if that is true. Herters (J9) Interarms (Mark X), Charles Daly (??), and Remington (798) imported them under different model name/numbers. Zastavas are currently being imported under their own name, as imported they make work-a-day hunting rifles, with work they can be made into higher grade rifles. Gunbroker is your friend if you are looking for Zastavas in any of the form.

Another option for commercial Model 98's are Parker Hales, some of the PH's were made on Model 98, I am not aware enough about then to know which models were mausers.

Are you familiar with actions made by American Rifle Company?
