Current Prairie Dog hunting conditions

I just called my favorite ranch in NE Wyoming and he told me they have had so much rain this year that the grass is really tall. That means we can't see the dogs hidden down in the grass or see where the shots hit in the grass.

Does anyone know if conditions are better in Eastern Colorado or Western Nebraska and Kansas?

I was out yesterday to SE Colo. and the grass/weeds were too high in 2 out of the 4 towns we shoot. Good luck and I hope you have some options, if not it might be wait till next year.

Depends on the area, yes its high here & there, but I like that since I shoot prone and lay at the edges of the towns since its all cut down by the little rats and pop them off.
Other spots I lay on hill tops over looking towns and let go.
I do not sit at a bench ever for them...waste of shooting time when I can walk 100-300 yards and keep popping them.

IF you are shooting from a high point, you will be able to see some of your impacts, but not all of your impacts.
I took Sebastian out for a couple of hours after we got back from the F-Class Nationals/World match and that was our experience.

Ernie,

We just got back last night. Conditions were not favorable, but I made some very close shots the first evening before the storm hit. It rained hard for two hours and that made it impossible to see impacts for the next two days until the ground dried out enough. I made several more whisker burning shots the last morning. Wind never let up that evening and we left with less than 100 rounds having been fired at the 1 mile attempt.

I did achieve my main goal, which was to help my son get his 1000 yard dog. I've been inviting him to come with me every trip for four years. This was his first time and I spent more time spotting for him than I did shooting myself. He was using my wife's competition rifle with a Pierce 700 clone and a 6BR Krieger screwed on. Bullet was a 105 hybrid.
