Crow shooting

I've called and shot a countless number of crows. But always while using a shotgun. It's hard to picture many crows coming to a call and then lighting at a spot with a safe backdrop for rifle shooting. Usually crows will stay in the air and circle but when they do land it's usually in a tree.

A few years back, a partner of mine and I fashioned a crow out of 3 wire coat hangers, and a black trash bag using some good black electrical tape. We then put a plastic owl on a string about 8 feet off the ground and taped the crow image to the bottom of the owl. (Who says nothing good comes from a few shots of good bourbon)

When he kicked on that owl- crow fight and then the dying crow call ..... the crows came in masses to that pecan orchard and they wouldn't let up till nearly the whole flock was shot up. We noticed that it was especially effective with a little breeze blowing.

We noticed too that if we let a few crows circle a few times that they would change their calling and the flock would literally swarm the area. That was the trip he cooked the O rings in his auto loading shotgun. BIG fun.:D:D WD

I was doing some minor yard work today and there were some crows yaking off in the distance, but with no safe backdrop, I just had to listen to 'em yak and yak and yak. I really wanted to bust one or two of 'em.

I ONCE popped a pigeon off a barn roof at about 15 feet with a 50 grain Blitz from a 222. Bird disappeared, leaving only a leg, some red goo, a pillow full of feathers and a lonely helicopter wing floating....

For years I could not kill a crow, no matter how I tried. Once the spell was broken I began to hit them pretty well. I find a 17HMR does a number, espceially when shooting in branches with a bit o backdrop. that little bullet tends not to survive much twigs, leaves etc.
