Crow Season

Crow season opens early November here in South Carolina time to tune the 22BR and 17 Fireball for some fun!

Our crow season is in the dead of winter, so I have given it up. Nothing worse than lying in the freezing snow with a 12 pound rifle :(

When crow season first opened back in the previous century, Florida Fish and Game informed me in no uncertain terms crows were migatory game and as such could not be shot with a rifle. Have the rules changed?? LT

You can shoot them with a rifle in most states.

They are considered a federally protected pest here. You can shoot them anytime, if they are destroying seeded areas or crops. Most of the game guys will tell you that any crow is always destroying crops (with a wink)... but I would not take a chance in running into the only boy scout in the agency.

Years ago there were no regulations on shooting crows as they were considered a pest/varmint. Then the politicians stepped in and said NO!

So now there damage is in the millions of dollars a year category. This revelation was started by the Democratic party!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If they opened up a wide open season now it is doubtful that the crow hunting fraternity would ever return due to the cost of shooting. Just ask any farmer about crows!

Just another thing to think about when you VOTE, you are going to VOTE, right!

The Illinois crow season also just opened, (Oct. 28 - Feb. 28) and they are considered a "Migratory Game Bird" here.
As such, they cannot be hunted with rifles.

We are allowed to use electronic callers and with my Foxpro and a few decoys, it makes for some great shotgunning!

Actually, no - it was not our politicians (unless you consider their ignorance of hunting and farming issues), and it was not started by the democratic party ;)

The crow protection comes from a badly worded international treaty, and somewhere around page 987 was protection for migratory game birds... OK, that is good, I mean there are a eleventeen kajillion ducks that travel from Mexico
(and parts south), all the way up to Canada to nest and make more ducks, and then they fly back down south to bask in the sun.

The problem was that migratory "predatory trash birds", like the crow, were now protected. So the crow got over night protection. A few states have no seasons (cuz nobody cares), but most game commissions took it seriously. Of the states that took it seriously, some made seasons and limits follow the needs of hunters, but in states that don't give a rat's *** about the hunters or farmers, the seasons are during the time of year when there are no crows in the state... so there is no problem (Gag).

Well, if they opened crow shooting in the spring and summer in my state, you'd go deaf from the sound of rifles and shotguns.

Pennsy crow are in now, Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. They get the rest of the week to just fool around. ;D The season is open July 4 through April 5 so plenty of fair weather varmint shooting.

I grew up with the understanding that crows were vermin; farmers were and, are delighted for any thoughtful soul willing to expend good money for shells and cartridges to eradicate as many flying rats as possible.

With that thought in mind, I personally cannot justify pursuing this species if our politicians deem it necessary to regulate when and where I can oblige a farmers well founded concerns regarding crop damage.

In short, knowing my personal beliefs and comments are to many, politically incorrect, damn the politicians and regulations; when farmers demand financial relief for crop damage I hope that these fools in government take a moment and reflect on yet another mindless political action, drafted by unknowing, uneducated scribes, poorly drafted and, pathetically enforced.

Yes, we enjoy reducing their population here in PA!

If your into Crows you have to vist crowbusters.com make sure you read the hate mail. I bought a decoy from them they call it Buster. The way to use it is attach a fishing line to it and turn it on. It actually flys around in circles and drives the Crows nuts. The only problem with it is from time to time the Redtail hawks will swoop in and grab the thing and take it to the ground. They dont even realise its a decoy and will sit on it trying to kill it. This excites the Crows even more and leaves the hunter with a agonising decision. Use deadly force to defend Buster from the Hawk or just shoot another Crow. I personally shoot another Crow.

A long time ago a friend told me that he and another friend decided to go crow hunting. They heard that crows hate cats, so with considerable loss of blood they procured a live cat and tied it to a fence post. Then they hid in the bushes and enjoyed some fantastic crow shooting.

Understand I am a cat lover and do not endorse this method. I'm just sayin'.......

I have only shot 3 crows in my 63 years. I personally suspect that crows have magical powers they use for evil and those three are the cause of all my misfortunes. Oh, the heights I might have risen to had it not been for those three crows.

Every fall, the crows begin to congregate in the evening near where I work. They must come from the countryside for miles around, because there are hundreds, if not thousands of them. They seem to like the lights of the local high school and industrial plants. Some say it protects them from owls. Personally, I think they are massing for revenge against me. I heard they can live for 40 years. That's a long time to nurse a grudge. They must be pretty mad by now.

If killing crows resulted in a life long curse from the survivors, my life would be worse than anything Alfred Hitchcock could imagine. ;)

Did you ever witness a 40 gr Vmax at 4200mv colliding with a crow. You can immediately plant corn on the remains. Barlow

Well we went out Saturday to the farm and put three down two with the 17 Fireball and a 275 yard kill with the 22 BR. Had a great day and damn I love my 22BR....

thats a pain having a season for the crows-here in the uk we can shoot -trap -annoy crows all year round .they are classed as vermin and under the general license that covers all pest/vermin fur or feather we can have fun all year round . a good decoy for crows is a stuffed red fox placed out in a field it drives them nuts placed near a tree gives good shooting as they land to shout abuse at the fox.my .17rem 20vmax loves them.

Here in N C i have a crow problem on my farm. They probably pulled 2 acres of corn up when it was about 3 inches tall. I have had people come over and try to call them in, but after the first shot they are gone. I shoot them with my varmint rifle, the last one i killed was about 350 yards. If they see me walk out of the house with my rifle they are gone------.My next project is to get in touch with Idaho and find out how they poison them. They have a poison they use that only kills crows and ravens, and nothing else. There are hundreds of them landing in my picked corn field all the time. You read how easy it is to call in crows but not these.I can put on my camo and sneak thru the woods to the field and kill ONE and they are gone. It's good practice for the yotes though.

Have you tried owl dekes and an electronic call? I haven't done it in a while but it used to work. We used shotguns with #4s.
