Crafting a Rifle Stock

That looks like a good source. Send me a blank and we’ll make Dusty’s dream come true. I just hope he has a gun porter!;) She’s going to be heavy!o_O
a heavy stock for sure haha. I'll head over there soon, I've got some other stuff I am searching for as well.

Like a really nice piece of maple for me!
I don't believe my local contact has any maple, sorry bud. He didn't have any last time I was over there. I have few folks you can reach out to if you really want some, I can send you their contact info

C Stuck what is the piece of wood that is attached to the drill press just above the chuck in some of the first pictures in this thread? I am assuming that this has something to do with a depth stop???? I set up a desk top delta to trim my 223 cases with a forester drill press trimmer and it had the depth stop as a dial and set screw inboard of the crank that is used to lower the drills into the material you are drilling. It was not near accurate enough to cut cases and i was hoping that you had invented the answer.

Nice work. I built a few two pc stocks for my guns about 30 yrs ago, an 1885 and a 044-1/2. I really enjoyed shaping it and getting it in the near finsh state where I could put some mineral spirits on it and see what the final product shud look like. I did mine with chisels, rasps of various kinds, a dremel tool and a pile and a half of sandpaper. They were on bird's eye with fiddleback in them. I practiced on some 1x8 stuff I laminated together,to get it thick enough, it was a learning curve. Stuff like the 044-1/2 is interesting getting the tangs right, and a curved buttplate takes a lot of patience., drilling the hole for the stock bolt on the 1885 wrecked a couple of pcs in the practice sessions. Seeing a couple of things you did in those pics, gave me a couple of ideas to try with a couple of different and better, tools that I have acquired since, have to build a jig, but should make things simpler. Still have no clue what I'm doing, but, will likely get at it later this year again.

I was so happy seeing this and your work looks great. I build about 10 laminated custom stocks a year and use the cheekrest parts with thumbwheel and 3 way or 4 way butt plates. So many people are just looking for a bolt-on chassis and they do not realize the advantage of a good fit on a stock. I draw the hardware in full scale and have drawings i made of the actions and will glue them to the blank and just mill out inside the lines to inlet. Works pretty well and i can print out and use the drawings over and over. I save a lot of time in not drawing the data on each stock.
