Coyote Hunting

More interesting to me is where they weren't not so long ago. My now-deceased hunting buddy (with a Wildlife Management degree from NC State U.) claimed coastal North Carolina was the last portion of the country to receive Canis latrans.



PS This map (of 20 C. latrans subspecies, dated 1978) suggests my buddy was right.

I would research to see which area has the highest coyote population and go from there.
There was a guy over on predator masters that guided coyote hunters.

I hunted Mexico for 12 years, few in the USA would ever believe the coyote population down there.

If you want a trip of a life time, do a coyote/duck, dove, pigeon hunt....take your best friends. If you like to fish, stay another week for the bass fishing.

Brians356.... I like those maps.... what do those numbers mean on the last map? Even though I live in SC.... I go out West to area #10 every year in NOV for a month... chasing those coyotes.

Tony Tebbe used to guide in lower NM.... not sure if he is still doing it or not.... he can defiantly put you on some coyotes.

I wouldn't bother with any of the Great Basin states, especially Eastern Oregon. They've been pretty much hunted out around here, and it would be a waste of time and gasoline. jd

Brians356, I do believe your buddy was right or real close to it. I shot my first coyote in 1976 and where the bottom tip of the black is in TN. I was hunting close to that area. First thought it was a German Shepherd as I had never seen a coyote. Kansas and Missouri have a lot of coyotes also. I have often wondered if the Game Comissions have brought them into each state also.

We have a fairly large number of yotes in Mississippi...but much harder to hunt them here than in the more open terrain of the Western states.

The Idaho and Montana area is best source of QUALITY fur ,, a lot of the Midwest/central regions have been populated by these red-tinged dawgs, and the buyers don't like them as much.

Guided coyote hunts would not be a profitable adventure, they move and adapt quickly. Of ten , I will visit the same stand and call 4-8 times without success.
Everybody that is legal to own an AR15 , owns a FoxPro around my area .. They go out, and you'll hear 4 guns empty part of a 30 round mag, and nobody comes out with a pelt..

Yes it does. And we cannot shoot solid projectiles after sunset, so they know they just have to wait for the amateurs to go home I still pick off a few curious one's that don't hear hand calls often .. I've buck-shotted a few at close range, by the moonlight, but that's tough to hide from the fur buyer, So I set snares , and pick up the skittish ones pretty quick.
