Could someone explain buckshot coating

It helps prevent deformation as it goes through the forcing cone and choke if there is any. Nickel plated lead or Heavishot is best.

Copper coated? Nickel coated?
Which is better? Or is it really than plain lead? How bout hevishot?

Thanks
For the tightest patterns, plated buckshot is the best,[nickle ] IF it is Hard 4-6%antimony lead, usually a buffered load,Hevi Shot is Night & Day Better than the best plated hard lead shot

What's the objective??

If you are jumping from lead to heavier than lead, I'd jump to TSS. Guys kill deer and hogs with relatively "fine" TSS at incredible ranges. (I wanna say BB and #2). Heck of a lot more pellets in the pattern. Patterns are probably going to blow away typical buckshot. And it's nearly twice as heavy as lead. That's how you get away with decreasing size. It's harder and small so it penetrates better.

I went from comparable loads of nickel plated #6 and #9TSS in my flintlock. Went from 120ish hits in a 10" circle to 320ish in the same 10" circle at 30yds. It's impressive stuff.

Expensive. But if you want the best performance....it's tough to beat IMO.

I use plated buckshot for deer hunting. For years, my preferred ammo was Remington's Premier nickel-plated 000 buckshot. Unfortunately, they dropped that product a while ago and I switched to Federal and Winchester copper-plated 000 buck. I prefer that size over anything smaller.

I have very little experience with buckshot but I did a fair amount of testing with #4,#5, & #6 shot. I was only looking at patterns, nothing on penetration.
I found no advantage with copper over magnum lead. It seems it is just a soft piece of lead coated in copper.
It did seem that nickel had denser and more consistent patterns than either copper or lead. Not enough to make me say "wow" but some improvement.
Hevi shot is different altogether and I have never loaded any. I have killed a few turkeys with it and it is superior to all of the above.
As mentioned, TSS is the Holy Grail and on an entirely different plane, if you are willing to pay for it. I believe TSS is equivalent to 5 sizes larger lead shot so #10 TSS has the same energy as #5 lead. It turns a .410 into a legitimate 40 yard turkey gun.

Whitetail hunting , 45-50 yds

Lead shot has a density of 10g/cc give or take...

Hevishot runs in the 12-13g/cc range typically.

TSS is running 18+g/cc.

If I were deer hunting with a shotgun and it were legal, I'd definitely look to TSS. The patterns are just incredible. Even with something like #2 or BB sized, you center that pattern on the shoulder of a deer and I'd bet it crumbles instantly. You'd have holes in the vitals and spine and a shoulder that's busted to pieces. Yes. It'll break bone and penetrate. The biggest question is what chokes and what range...no idea...but if it's like the fine shot, it'll be a much better pattern than buckshot.

Just don't go unloading on deer running by....it'd get expensive in a hurry lol.

I have killed a pile of deer with Winchester copper plated and federal copper plated 00 3” buckshot. We used to do a lot of man drives. Killed deer beyond 50 yards with no issues. Put the load in the neck and head and you don’t need nothing fancy!
