Cottonwood boards for sale

basswood is a poplar from tulip poplar

It's easy to mix common names for local trees, but to be factual, basswood is a northern hardwood, Tilia genus. Tulip tree is a southern American softwood, Liriodendron Genus. Completely different from each other and both completely unrelated to any "Poplar".

I have a sawmill and one of my buddies called the other day and said he has several "cottonwood" tree logs I can have if I want them. Now, both he and I live in Maryland and it was my understanding that "cottonwood" is a midwestern tree??? I cant say for sure what this wood is because for one thing I haven't even gotten the logs yet. Maybe someone planted them and they really are cottonwood, I will find out. If they are you are welcome to all the boards you want for the shipping. How thick do you want them??? Probably pick them up this coming week.

Edit: if it's lightweight you are looking for I have a metric $hit ton of Royal Paulownia already dry. It is like balsa wood but way stronger.

So you are saying it can be worked a bit green with out warping ? Would you no if it is much heavier than cottonwood? thanks Gary

IF, again, IF the grain is straight in the log the piece is cut from there is usually very little warp, twist or cup. That has been my experience.

The internet has White Ash listed as 40-53 lbs. per cubic foot, and Cottonwood as 25 lbs. per cubic foot. That would have to be dried Cottonwood as Aspen is listed as 26 lbs per cubic foot. The Aspen we have in this area and the Cottonwood from some distance south of here are similar. Both carry a lot of water when cut, and will loose likely half their weight when dry. In my experience, White Ash does not have the water content of Cottonwood when cut, and so does not loose as much weight.

Anyone out there Mill or sell Cottonwood boards or know of where I can but some? Trying to build packsaddle trees and can't come up with the wood for the bars in this area.
I tried to cure out some cottonwood boards a bunch of years ago. I live in Reno and everything warped and checked up bad. Maybe some wax and small stickers would have worked but those big ol’ trees are gone now.
