Correct neck bushing

How am I overworking my brass.
This is a 6ppc benchrest rifle. I. Pretty sure I'm doin pretty much exactly how the other shooters are doin it.
I need or I'm shooting for .265 to .266 loaded round.

I use an expanding mandrel to enlarge my neck after the bushing sizing. The mandrel brings the id of the neck to 0.002 of the bullet diameter. My bushing sizes the neck down 0.002 less than the mandrel.

Why would you do that?
When you tighten a bolt and it goes all mushy and you can feel it's yielding, do you just keep on tightening a few more turns? You know it's not actually providing more tension at that point, right?

Brass necks yield at ~1/2thou. You don't need a lot of sizing in excess of that downward, and then a bunch in excess upward.

A target doesn't know your best, and neither do you until you punch holes with knowledge.

I don't have gauge pins just using calipers

Calipers will not do a good job. You need some pins. Go on Amazon and buy a few certified pins. You do not need to buy a whole set if you don’t want to. Remember some bushings are tapered and some are straight walled.

Sorry I meant to say .004 less than seated bullet diameter. You say that’s excessive but it works for me.

I went out today and I didn't see much difference between the two .263 bushings I had one carbide and the other redding steel bushing

Not being a wise guy! You need more powder work and maybe a tuner before stressing over bushing size! That group needs to shrink a lot.

Measuring the brass after sizing is a .261 . I have a chamber for a .268

Your making it to complicated. Why woud you buy pin gauges for what is probaby an off the shelf factory rifle. Just buy 3 or 4 steel bushings and determine what neck tension each gives you by measuring neck o.d. before and after seating a bullet. A cheap digital caliper is accurate enough. Unless you have a very expensive BR quality rifle, expensive bench bags and great shooting skills you will probably never see a difference in neck tension at the target.

No it's not a buy off the shelves rifle. Your mileage may differ but what do you consider expensive. I am haveing a new one built at this very moment and the cost atm is about 4k .
Current rifle is a older custom action rifle..

I would do this but Imo kinda impractical If your a nbrsa competition. It would be another process to have to do with limited time. I could be wrong but don't know many nbrsa guys doing this. I would have to take another press and dedicate it just for a mandrel
