Coons in my corn???!!!!!

Oh the Humanity!!!!!!

A skunk got himself caught last night, there was a light odor this morning outside when I let the dogs out.
So I walked around the edge of the corn and there he was, all twisted up in corn stalks. I didn’t think they had long enough arms to reach into the duke trap and trigger it. Went back and got the 22 ( I know this is crazy from my trapping days). With him all twisted up I couldn’t get a clear shot at his head. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore, I took a shot at what I think was his head. Pretty sure that I hit him good, he started trembling and shaking - I took off across the yard like a scared kid!! The wife says she can smell it as she goes out to feed the chickens....LOL
Hope I can keep the dogs away until I can get rid of it!
Keep you all posted on how bad it is.

I was just talking to a friend in IA and he mentioned a neighbor trying to defend a large patch (couple acres) of sweet corn this year. With a dozen Coon cuffs (Griz getters) he caught 83 coons in 3 weeks!

I didn’t get any with the conibears.
Once I got those Dukes, I was getting even with them. I used sardines, maybe 1/2 down in the trap under the trigger and smeared just a touch above on a corn stalk to get the scent in the air.
Sadly I got into action a little late, they basically wiped out 6 rows about the 100 yards long. Next year I’ll be more prepared!!

Gary,
Speak to a Houndsman about hunting your Coons. This could be beneficial for both parties, especially if a Coon Hunter is training a young Coon Dog, for a good finished hound, your situation sounds like going "fishing in a bath tub. The one thing I will offer is to mandate that the Houndsman kill the Coons he trees.
Getting a crop damage permit for both parties should be simple in your situation thus allowing for year round control.
