convert Rem 700 22-250 to 6.5x47 Lapua

Howdy,

What are the differences between the Rem 700 22-250 action and 308W action? Does the bolt face or extractor need to be changed when going from 22-250 to a case with a 308 head such as 6.5x47 Lapua?

Is the cut in the Rem 700 receiver for the magazine longer in 308 than 22-250? I gather the 6.5x47 Lapua has the same overall round length as 308W.

What changes have to be made so that a magazine can still be used with the new case? Are all the changes confined to the magazine, and can the magazine simply be replaced? The gun is Rem 700 BDL.

Much obliged,
Grange.

The SA Rem has the same cutout for the magazine box regardless of caliber. Followers are different and some of the shorter cartridges require a spacer in the mag box. The detachable magazine models will only function correctly with the detachable magazine. Trying to convert these actions to standard box magazine mode will not work.

Are the extractor specs exactly the same for Rem 700 22-250 and 308W ?

The magazine is not detachable, but does have a hinged floorplate.

The picture I am getting is that there is nothing about the Rem 700,BDL, vintage about 1978) action that is different between the 22-250 and 308W, and that any difference in how the round is guided into the chamber is localised to the magazine.

Is the only difference between the 22-250 and 308W non-detachable magazines in the follower?
Is there no change to the magazine lip to take account of the different taper of the two cases?

Remington 700's come in 2 configurations, short and long. 308 win and 22-250 both use the short action. The extractor specs are the same for every .473" bolthead no matter what the cartridge.

Cool - it is good news that the actions are exactly the same.

Just need to nail down the magazine questions now.

I have looked at a list of components over at e-gunparts
Rem 700 non-detachable magazine
and it seems the magazine follower and spring are the same for 22-250 and 308W. However, it is not clear what magazine box to use for BDL 22-250, though it is clear what magazine box to use for BDL 308. Anyone know if the 308 magazine box should be used for 22-250?

If the follower is the same, the only place I see that there is room for difference is the upper edges of the magazine box, and these contact the top case in the magazine and are bent and could be bent differently for different cases.

Appended:
I see MidwayUSA lists
"Magazine Box Remington 700 BDL Short Action for 22-250, 243, 308 Blue"
with a single item number so I guess that's a wrap - there are no differences whatsoever in action or magazine for the two cartridges. If anyone knows or suspects that's not true, please let me know. I am amazed there is nothing to this conversion - just change the barrel being mindful of barrel contour and stock clearance.

Thankyou tightneck and DocEd.

My understanding is that the magazine box for the 22-250 is slightly different from the .308 one to deal with the difference in the taper of the case when feeding the round. I am not sure that I can recall any specific comments about using a 22-250 magazine box for a .308. Try it. The worst that I would expect to happen is that you may need to tweak it or replace it with one for a .308.
